New Monitor?

I left my PC on while I did other things. When I came back to it, the monitor would not display anything. The LED on the on/off switch flashed continuously. I tried the standard non-expert things: rebooting, disconnecting/reconnecting power and video leads, cursing at the thing. Nothing.

I retrieved an old monitor from the attic, and am in business again but with a smaller lower-resolution display.

I think I need a new monitor. In truth, the idea does not greatly bother me, because the quality of the old monitor (Acer) was only so-so. It's just a bit of inconvenience to shop for one.

    Two questions:
    1. Am I right to give up on the Acer, or have I missed out on a simple step or two to take?
    2. If I go for new, what do people recommend that is a decent size (19" or a bit more), fairly good quality, not too expensive, and easily sourced? [Dundalk is my nearest large centre, and it has branches of Harvey Norman and PC World.]

If there is a "Auto" button on your monitor try pressing it, worth a shot but couldnt guarantee it, otherwise decent 20" LCd monitors even are quite cheap these days, you will probably be ripped off buying in a shop like pc world, harvey normans etc, check out komplett, dabs, elara etc for cheaper prices

I had problems with Acers not coming out of standby before, the new 22" one I have works ok though, try it with a laptop or friends machine to see if it still has some go in it maybe?
If it's till under warranty, get on to Acer support.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Too late now. I found myself under pressure, because I have things to do this weekend. So I went shopping in Dundalk this afternoon, and came home with a Samsung 22" widescreen from Harvey Norman's. Yes, I know that I could have got something a little bit cheaper from some of the specialist outlets, but I can't afford the time: Murphy's law of computers states that components fail when you most need them.

I was surprised to find that I could find very few traditional format screens (and none of them seemed like a good buy). How quickly things change. I don't like widescreen, as most of what I do involves text, and I don't think widescreen is particularly good for text (I'd like tallscreen for that). But this weekend's pressure is for accounting work, and the new format is useful there.

[I'm afraid of reconnecting the Acer and trying the "Auto" button. I'll try it before my next visit to the recycling centre.]
