Yes you can do that but you will then be liable for full fees in the first year of med. If you got say 550 in the leaving would you repeat for an extra few points? They could make all the difference.

Well there's a way for everything, like you could do science or health sciences and do the GAMSATS and get in through that way, but you have to remember that you'll have to pay college fees after that!
If I don't get medicine I'm going to do science or something else and resit the HPAT, easiest route! :D
What do you think about points??

you must be so happy!! well done!! :):) and yeh i agree... alot depends on the day...when i did it last year it was the day after my mocks finished and id been really sick thru them so i think my brain was just fried and i was exhausted, it really makes a difference!

yeah i agree....i did it last year and got 89% but this year i was doin it in UCD graduate school and i was put rite next to the radiator and found myself soooo tired just 20 mins into it......and i dropped to 82%

so any of you's doing it next year....make sure your comfortable where you are sitting because it can really affect your results!

thats a really good idea! do you have to apply through the cao again? and well of course this all depends on what points i get! but fingers crossed ill get around 540 or so there is actually like a chance of getting in if i repeat the hpat!

Yeah you'd have to apply to the CAO again.
A few friends of mine from the year ahead of me did that this year and to say the least "they're definitely in"...repeating the HPAT does work (if you put the time in secind time round).
I'm hoping to god it won't go above 720 for NUIG, I got 168 yday

oh right that sounds like a good way of doing it and like even if you av ta pay fees the first year its not the end of the world!
fair play! ah they wont go up that much like they were about 712 last year i think id say the most would be like 3 or 4 points, youll be fine :)

There realy is plenty of ways and if I don't get it this year, i'll make sure that I apply to the UCAS next year all angles covered, and aswel, Scotland don't have any fees at all!!:D

Good advice I actually had the same problem- really annoyed me.

I dont know but many of the boards seems to have repeated hpat.I admire their perseverance but then again it seems easy do some other course and resit the hpat which takes 3 hours, which actually deprived someone of a place on the course who might really want it. But then who needs to care about that! Right? If you really want medicine what can you do?

true i get what you mean....but like someone who did resit their hpat would be in that category of people who really wants it! sure life isnt fair....but i wish everyone the best of luck if they want medicine!

i got 98th percentile! delighted! i did the hpat last year and got 53rd percentile, so i can do medicine now! i took a year out and did a prep course! totally worth it now! does trinity do a 6 year course this year?

I know that they only did the 5 yr last year and never heard anything about a 6 year course being introduced this yr, and i'm sure it would have popped up in conversation in my school since about half the school is going for med

Anyone heard what happens if the bonus points for higher maths comes in for 2011? It's supposed to be 2012 but politics seems to want to rule over common sense so 2011 is not out of the question. If I have 550 points this year and I repeat only the HPAT next year, will my 550 be increased in line with 2011 LCers who got the same grades as me but would have possibly 590 in the leaving (558 med points)? Doesn't seem fair that for the same grades they get 8 points more. Better off repeating if that's the case rather than being sucker punched in august 2011.

I wonder if you can present maths if you only have 1 science subject if you wanna do a 5 year course? i wonder if its hard to do the course without the extra year?

TBH, i'd say that its very very hard! A few of my friends did the 5yr course and they all did the 3sciences and they were glued to the library for the year, plus pre-med gives you loads of time to relax and regain a life after this year!!

I wouldn't say they'd accept maths since its not a science subject on any of the pre-med years.

When people say you have to pay fees in First year, do you mean it's just First year you have to pay them for? As in switching from another course in First year...

Yes, the "Free Fees (sic) Initiative" will only cover your fees for first year once ... so if you have done first year of one course and then transfer to another to start first year, you will be liable for full fees for that year.

I just finished my first year of general science in Trinity and i wanted med last year and i just missed out on RCSI in random selection as i had the points. But science is AWESOME, the people are amazing and the social life wuz unreal, never met such amazing people. I redid the hpat this year and got 99th percentile and now i shud be going into med in trinity, doing science for the last year was one of the best things that ever happened to me and i now have friends for life....there's always hope! just keep going after what you want! :D

Cizza, i think i'll end up being in the same boat as you as my hpat did not go as well as i hoped but my leaving cert should be ok not to have to be repeated...was science the only option for you to be able to go straight into first year med after repeating the hpat?
and does anyone know whether or not doing biomedical science/ human genetics/health sciences would be a good option if i plan to repeat the hpat and try and get in next year? which one would be better ? or would i have to do premed like everyone else?

oh (sorry for all the questions) but does it seem to anyone else that the points might go down by like five this year because there seems to be much more people bunched between the 150's and 170's mark then there was last year

Tizy, i have exactly the same problem as you. I will be prob about 5 points short based on last years points and who knows if they will go up. I was thinking of doing pharmacy for the year and resitting the hpat. I think the idea of a specialised science like genetics etc is worthwhile as in my opinion they would probably be closer in content to medicine and should hopefully stand to us when we hopefully get medicine next year. I think the points might stay static or increase as one thousand more people than last year sat the hpat this year so it wouldnt make much sense that they would decrease.

    Hey everybody,

I'm here for some advice or opinions!

I'm applying for medicine. I did Chemistry, Greek, Biology, Physics, Geography, Maths , and English at Higher Level. I got 213 at the Hpat. I've applied for (in order)

Trinity, UCD, RCSI, Cork and Galway.

The thing is, I dont want to do any premed! Please advise, I know UCD and RCSI have 6-year courses, but I really want to avoid any premed at any price. How could I arrange my options to minimise the chance of that?

Thanks everyone - if anyone has any questions, eg how to get a good score at the HPAT, i'd be glad to give any advice!

Trinity & UCC have no pre med, RCSI only has pre med if you don't have Chemistry as one of your 2 sciences, or only have 1 science, so not a problem for you. NUIG & UCD both have pre med but it's possible to be offered the 5 year course if you do well in your science LC subjects afaik, and you have Chemistry.

Well done on your HPAT, that's an amazing score (jealous :P)

    Saermegil, see here, page 2.

Note that these are "minimum subject requirements" ... I'm not sure if everyone with the minimum automatically gets offered the 5 year option, but you certainly won't be if you don't have them! :)

Thank you, that's really helpful - only, how what do they mean when they say good grades? I'm hoping for good grades of course - but what's the chance of being offered the premed for anyone with chemistry? I might ( after your advice) change it to Trinity, RCSI, UCC, UCD and Galway, but that means I might as well not apply for UCD!

I'm not sure, there's only a few places for the 5 year course offered to the highest acheivers. You'd have a better idea by asking someone doing med in one of those colleges.

I heard you need A1s in two more more science subjects.

    Hey guys

Im a UK applicant, got AAA in A2 Levels and another A in a separate AS (did these in 2009, so pre-2010 points count). I counted up the points and i have 510, which doesn't seem enough! But I checked on the CAO website that different universities give different points?! 510 points are for TCD, but NUI apparently give 15 points extra for an AS? Does that apply for NUIG as well? I got 183 in my HPAT, 92nd percentile... is that good or bad, im not sure lol.

could anyone give me a no BS realistic reply about my chances. much appreciated :)

Your HPAT score is excellent, but you'd need around 20/40 extra points (depending on that NUIG extra points thing you mentioned) to get medicine I think:rolleyes:
