There was just under 160 last year I think.

Only 90-ish of those places are CAO/UCAS ones.
There's loads of mature students from Canada and the USA... and... everywhere really.

    Nice and diverse.

Just wondering what peoples opinions on UCD and Trinity are? Is one better than the other? I know Trinity is higher points, but is it a better course? Are the standards of the two colleges roughly the same?

Points relate to demand. If more people apply to Trinity, the points go up, and that's the only reason. The medicine course is more or less the same in every college afaik, and you end up with the same degree at the end of it all. You have to take into consideration things like UCD offering premed, location, accomodation, etc. Course-wise I can't help you for those 2 colleges I'm afraid!

In terms of the course, it's probably much of a muchness but in terms of prestige/recognition of the degree abroad, Trinity has the edge. It is ranked in the top 50 universities in the world whereas the other Irish universities are way down the list. Guess it depends on how much you value this.

I heard UCD has the better course, Im not sure why, better facilities and different teaching methods and what not, but Trinity has the better name internationally. Im just wondering, what dyou think the chances are of points dropping? I had 720 for NUIG and Id be absolutely heartbroken to miss out because of random selection... :( I know there's no point speculating but still?

In Ireland I think UCD is considered the most prestigious for some reason, not entirely sure why, just remember a doctor saying that to me before. However I don't think it really matters, once you decide to specialise in something it'll be your publications and experience that'll count more than what college you went to!

I think there is a good possibility of points dropping across the board. When they drop in one, they tend to drop in the lower ones aswel, as people move up to their first choice. However, who knows...don't get your hopes up too much but at the same time be prepared to make quick accommodation changes on the second round offer day.

If you had a back up, accept it (if you are interested in doing it as opposed to repeating or taking a year out etc). If the med points drop, you'll still get offered it even if you accepted your number 5 or 6 on your CAO already.

I think points should defo come down a little bit last year there was a pretty big jump in points for all courses an most came down a bit in second round also defo get papers checked if your short rem bio paper last year loads of people done out of points... plus one point is nothing it should defo come down dat much an you could always take a year out an repeat the hpat if its wha u really want to do ul find a way im 23 an already did a science degree an jus got my offer to do med in galway dis year, hpat repeating defo an option i brought mine up to 208 dis year with med entry prep course i defo reccommend it , its worth considerin if ur lc points are around 550 anyway ul get it second round there is no way it wont come down at least one point....

Hey ! Me too :) I did a year of pharmacy in Cork and sat the HPAT again. I'm really looking forward to starting now after just missing out last year.
I assume you will be starting the 5 year course?

I was wondering if I could start the 5 year course after doing physics and chemistry as well as one year of Pharmacy?

Ohh jeez. I thought it would be 70 or so. Is it possible to get to know everyone in your class? (suppose this goes out to everyone really!)

Didn't get medicine, not even close at 717. Ah well, some things are meant to be and I'll be studying the very unrelated History and Politics :P

you never know galway came down 3 points for med last year so it could happen again

Well since nobody else told me or knew, I went to CAO and got some data based on last years changes in subsequent rounds. This may be useful for people like myself just falling short of the cut off for your medicine place.

    According to CAO:

    Trinity College Dublin Round 1 Points : 737 Last Round : 723 Reduction:-14

    University College Dublin Round 1 Points : 727 Last Round : 719
    Reduction: -8

    RCSI Round 1 Points : 718 Last Round : 715
    Reduction: -3

    NUI Round 1 Points : 717 Last Round : 712
    Reduction: -5

    UCC Round 1 Points : 728 Last Round : 715
    Reduction: -13
    SOURCE: http://www2.cao.ie/points/lvl8_09.pdf

First round points for Med 2010-

    TCD: 731*

    UCD: 725*

    UCC: 725

    RCSI: 723

    NUI: 720*

    Comments anyone?

That shows the midpoint score, not the first round offer. i.e it shows the middle score of people who got into trinity. I think first round offers for trinity were about 728/729. The points should still go down a bit in round 2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 CouldBe

Yeah Ive looked at that a couple of times, but if you look at the first page, the points are under "Final" and "Midpoint".... I dont think Midpoint means first round then, cos then why wouldn't they just call it 1st Round??

Anyone know where to obtain the first round points from 2009? Well they are bound to come down 1-3 points minimum each I would imagine. If thats the case some of us might be in with a shout.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,109 ✭✭✭QueenOfLeon

Last years first round offers were:

    Trinity 728
    UCD 723
    RCSI/UCC 715
    NUIG 713

They all dropped, from 1-5 points.

Edit: This was from memory but I've had a look through the old hpat threads and some posts say that Trinity was 729. It was one or the other!

Aww, thanks QueenOfLeon, your a star! Well, I'm not saying anything yet, but at least I have a chance, I just have to pray like hell that its similar to last year. I'm nervous again, before now I was mostly dejected... Just gotta wait till 2nd September now! What's your opinion on what could happen this year QueenOfLeon? and everyone of course.

With Galway on 720 I think the lowest it is going to fall by is 3 points to 717. I think people like yourself on 719 are in a brilliant position for Round 2 offers and I would be really surprised if we weren't in the same class next year:)

Many people will have accepted places in Galway who actually wanted Dublin and as they move up in Round Two places will be open to those on 719 in Round Two.

Although it is speculation on my behalf I think you have a very good chance!

have indo supplement on points open in front of me now
trinity last year was 729 and dropped to 723 in second round
Cork last year was 715 and didnt go down second round
UCD was720 and dropped to 719
Galway was 713 and dropped to 712
RCSI was 715 and didnt drop
so chances are it wil drop at least one point but defo look into recheckin papers an stuff ul be surprised where u could get 5 points out of which would equate to 1 point if ur already over 550 jus wha u need.....i know someone who managed it dat way last year

Tbh I do think they'll drop but I don't want to get people's hopes up...theres every chance they won't, it just all depends on what the people who've been offered med already decide to do. Which college do you want? (Don't be picky, a few hours travelling will be worth it if you get one further away from home! :))

I would think that some people will defer it, or take a place in the North or in England. Or they could decide they don't want medicine. Whatever college they move from, spaces will open up for people who may have taken med in another college, which opens up more spaces, and so on. This also means that med may have a 3rd round....if someone accepts UCD, then gets a 2nd round offer for Trinity, the place in UCD will be given in the 3rd round.

All you can do it wait! But have accommodation options ready...if you're just on the edge the most likely college will be Galway, so be prepared to have to look for somewhere to live asap after getting an offer (hopefully!). :)

Yea realistically I guess Galway is my best chance with 719, but I guess I could get really lucky and get somewhere in Dublin, but highly doubt that at the moment, unless RCSI drop 4 points in round 2 or 3. But like you said all of us just need to wait! Really appreciate that info and input though. Thanks very much!

edit: oh and preferably I wanted any of the 3 in Dublin, but now I don't mind any except cork really because it is the whole length of Ireland away from us up here in Donegal lol.

You should be careful about getting hopes up on points dropping. Last year there were NO 2nd round offers for med NUIG. Offers were made later to 5 applicants on 712.

Can I ask where you got that from? 2nd round offer was 712 but random selection.
