    Hi all,

I got a new puppy on friday, and I just have a couple of questions.

She only wants to go to the toilet in the house!!!! She's been out for loads of walks and trips, but waits until she gets home to do her business. Its not just in the one place either, she's gone in the living room, kitchen, bedroom and landing.

Today we were out of the house from 10 until 4, and during the day we went for four walks / playing outdoors. She's been sleeping in the car between walks, so I assumed she'd go to the toilet when we got out of the car after naps, but she didnt then as soon as we got in the door she went for a pee!

    Any tips??

Also, she is wasnt handled as a pup, so she is quite shy of people, any hints on how to increase her trust in us? we've given her space, and she has been hand fed quite a bit but she doesnt like coming to us. I know it will take time, but any advice? Id like to start training her asap but I want to get her trust forst.

    Thanks in advance!

Ok firstly, congrats on the pup.

Secondly, how old is this pup? as if its very young then it shouldnt be out for loads of walks as its not good for them to get too much exercise at a young age, the rule is "5 mins per month of age per day", so if its 3 months old then thats a walk of only 15mins, once that day.

Also, where did you find the breeder of this pup as young pups really shouldnt be timid, they should be all friendly and playful and want to be with you, not backing off you. Sounds like it wasnt socialised properly before you got it, which isnt a good sign.

With regards to toilet training, you have to teach the pup what you want it to do, it doesnt just know to go outside, you have to encourage it and praise him when he does.

The best way is to take the pup outside every hour, after meal times, after it has a drink. after play time and after a nap. Bring the pup outside and use a word/phrase that you associate with toilet training, and once the pup goes, lots of praise, fuss and even a titbit to reward it.

It can take weeks, even months to fully train a pup so you just need to be patient and consistant.
Whatever you do, dont scold the pup too much if you catch it going in the house, just saya firm "no" then pick it up and get it to finish its business outside and reward.

she's about 12 weeks old, i know quite a bit about dogs, so she's not being over exercised, its more so playing sessions that she's been having today, she is still keen to play more when we leave, and its all been on soft grass.

she was gotten for me as a surprise, I was planning on getting a dog from the pound, but my friends knew I always wanted a husky so they got her for me for my birthday.

She wasnt socialised much with people at all, but had a lot of socilisation with dogs.

I know to praise her when she goes outside, but she hasnt been going at all outside.

I just clean up her mess and disinfect the area well so there shouldnt be a scent left on the floor to encourage her to use that area.

Just looking for tips really as to how to encourage her to go when we are outside. I wait for her to go for ages outside. If i stand still she just sits down beside me, and if i walk slowly she keeps exploring!

Also, looking for tips on how to get her to bond with me. I know she will eventually, but any tips would help!!

1st of all i would like to wish you good luck with her,and 2nd of all to win her trust with you.get a block of cheese and cut it up very small sit on the ground with her beside you and just have one bit of cheese in your hand, close your hand with the cheese in it and let her smell it dont give it to her, move away from her and throw the bit of cheese to her,and then keep moving away from her a little bit more and throw her another bit of cheese.do this for a week or 2 every day.and after 2 weeks out in the garden with her and small bits of cheese in a bag,sit down and she will come to you for the cheese.that is how you win them over.i had a st bernard bitch with the same problem, and i won her over she comes to everyone now.so i wish you well with your new baby and if you need anymore info just let me know.

Try putting her out in the garden at regular intervals - say every hour. Also if you catch her going to the toilet in the house tell her "no" very firmly and put her outside, telling her this is where she goes to the toilet. Don't expect results overnight, though. It'll take a while. Don't make too much of a fuss about it though - she'll learn in time

restrict the areas in your house where you let the pup go...say just let her in the kitchen at the min...untill shes trained!
with my last pup, every time she woke after a sleep and after every meal /play etc i brought her outside and used a command (mine is..go tiolet:p) also what works really well is to put her on a lead and just walk in a small circle saying your command, be patient it can be frustrating lol!!
dogs love routine so if your consistant she should get the idea!!
some bleaches can also attract the dog back to an area they soiled so i`ve heard:confused:
    good luck!!! :)

Yes make sure the cleaner you are using isnt ammonia based. It smells like another dog to them. We use Zoflora its safe for pets and you can buy it in Tesco

Ammonia based bleach can attract dogs back to the same spot. Chlorine based are good to use, but when using and harsh cleaners make sure it is dry before the dog walks on it. Also, if you don't use some type of enzyme cleaner to break down the scent of the poo/pee on the carpet the dog will be attracted back ot the same place. Diluted biological washing powder or special enzyme cleaners (these can be found in most large pet stores) are the best things to use when cleaning up after a dog.

Bonding with a dog is really a matter of time, and spending time with it. Walks, training, playing etc. should help with it. Anything that involves the two of you having fun and spending time together is a good thing. Even lazing on the couch with her on your lap!

As far as toilet training goes, bring her out tot he garden every 2 hours (she's 10 months so should be able to hold it more than a young pup) and stand there for about 10 mins or until she goes. Right after she goes, give her loads of praise (not while she's going, it'll distract her!). After a while she'll know that the garden is the place to go. You can also start to give her a command while she is going (I use "go toilet") so that once she gets the hang of it you can give her the command and she'll go, if she needs to. It can be a pain at first but she'll learn!

hi all, thanks for the replies. I completely forgot about amonea smelling like dog pee to dogs, that could be part of the problem!!

Ive had dogs all my life, and ive done canine psychology and canine studies courses so i know all the basics, was just looking for anyones unique or different ways to speed up the toilet training / bonding process.

She's come on leaps and bounds already, she's a very cleaver little girl!!!

thanks, i think she's cute too!! I love her markings and her one blue eye!!

I really wanted a unique name, an irish one or innuit, but Bella just stuck in my head!!

An adult husky can look a little intimidating to a child, so I think the name Bella sounds friendly and should put kids at ease!
