French state-owned financial institution Caisse des Depots will invest EUR 750 million over three years to support the fibre roll-out in areas of low population density, announced prime minister Francois Fillon during an interministerial seminar addressing the contribution of France's economic stimulus package to the digital economy. La Tribune reports that Fillon said that investment of several billion Euro would be necessary to extend ultra-fast broadband across the country through a combination of fibre and wireless technologies. He also insisted that public investment could only be considered to be complementary to private initiative. Bordeaux mayor and former prime minister Alain Juppe, who co-chairs the consultative committee on the economic stimulus package, said the digital economy had every chance of being among the chosen investments, but that if EUR 40 billion of government money were to be spent to fibre the country, there would not be much left for other areas of the economy. The commission is due to make its recommendations in November.
