Increase in "missing" optical drives?

    Just wondering if anyone has noticed this - particularly those working in the repair business. I'm seeing lots of laptops come back with the optical drive missing. Simple reg fix, but I hadn't seen the problem for a long time.
    Last time I remember was back with iTunes and most Packard Bell laptops, but that was XP.

    Any idea what software might be causing it? I've seen it a lot on older laptops (1+ years), but also quite a bit on new laptops only purchased within the week.
