Can you change from double glazing to single glazing?

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of changing from double glazing to single glazing.

The reason I'm thinking about doing this is because 9 of my current double glazed windows now have broken seals. They're 15 years old, I'm 56, unemployed and looking for a solution to this problem, without having to spend a lot of money.

I'm thinking of changing my windows to single glazing because in 15 years time I wouldn't be able to afford to change the double glazing again.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

This can be done by changing the bead and rubber that hold the glass in the frame of the window.. If you keep the old beads and ever want to change back just pop in the old beads and rubber..

You have the rubbers off the ones your replacing, its just a mater of getting the new beads.. If worse came to worse you could always pack the glass and fill the gap with silicone..

Have you got any quotes to replace with double glazed units again? I cant see it being that much more expensive. Where do you live?

    Are they pvc windows?

The rubbers for double glazed windows are smaller than single glazed ones. The bar and one sheet of glass are missing in single glazing.
I did get 3 quotes to replace the double glazed ranging from 1200 to 1500 all the people who gave quotes were not interested in the idea of puting in single glazed glass. I got a quote from the Glass Guru to put holes in the double glazed units but I am doubtful of this process as the cost was 600. The windows are aluminium.

If you get me approx sizes and are willing to fit them I can get you a supply only price for double glazed units. I work for a company that manufactures them.

You are not going to be using the same beads, you are going to get bigger ones to make up for the bar and one sheet of glass that will be missing...

i imagine the saving on energy on double over single glazing will make the windows pay for themselves. Have you thought of replacing these one at a time.

There is a company called "the glass guru" who specialise in repairing pvc window systems.
I have no affiliation to them.
