Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Wow great thread, I enjoyed that over my weetabix this morning! Any more videos of the R8's gunning the engines, engine noise doesn't get captured enough on these types of cars, I've always though that about top gear and 5th gear, they never make any effort to get a decent clip of the exhaust notes.

The R8 revving briefly in Geoff's vid sounds spectacular.

Thanks again, this place needs more threads like this:pac:

    ..Victor_M - I agree, the sound is fan-tastic (with apologies to D Mooney... ).

I think it's safe to say the cameraphones have the pics down pat at this stage - all my pics, the links to my own gallery included - are all from my phone. Comparable quality video, and sound is all we need to crack now to make it perfect ! Dunno if that phone is out there yet........:)

You can do the same thing in Silverstone for about 400 sterling. RS4's, S5s and TTs. It's usually held a couple of times a month. After graduating from this you can tear around Rockingham in an R8.

Thanks for the write up lads.
Motors forum thread of the year I think!

Now if I win €100 on the lotto I'll put another €900 to it and do this next time.

Perhaps I don’t have the racing gene. Some of my colleagues take to it superbly. Show them a racetrack and they grin like Cheshire cats. I, on the other hand, always feel a certain amount of trepidation.

However, this may have passed thanks in large part to the Audi Sportscar Experience in Mondello Park last week. Now in its fourth successful year, the course is priced at €1,070. That’s a hefty expense in a recession for a day’s driving, but then again, so is running an entire fleet of V10 Audi R8s or indeed Audi S4s, which were our school cars for the day.

Unlike some of the more basic racing tuition we have experienced, thankfully there is a certain amount of knowledge assumed and after just a few minutes you are into a car. In our case it was the S4 Avant. The Mondello circuit was broken up into sections, the idea being that you perfect each of the 3.5km track’s corners.

It’s a good way to learn the track. Audi’s vastly experienced teachers stand and watch you take a corner and then (in various European languages translated into English) coax, badger, insult and encourage you into taking the right racing line. You do each corner over and over until you get it right, then on to the next one.

By the time you take the hugely powerful R8 V10s to the circuit to complete full laps behind an instructor, your brain has joined up the corners into a complete circuit and the track in its entirety seems infinitely less daunting. The cars themselves are probably some of the best you could learn high-performance driving in – the quattro all-wheel drive provides leech-like grip and any slide feels controlled.

Of the many tuition courses available, we would rank this as one of the best. Would-be racers may find the day a little on the slow side, as the convoy system doesn’t allow for overtaking, but it also prevents €230,000 worth of Audi ending up in a tyre wall.

At the end of the day, a certificate, your own racing helmet, a full belly and infinitely improved driving skills mean that the €1,070 doesn’t seem like money badly spent, and for real petrol-heads, it is a day of heaven.

Audi expects to be back next year, anyone interested can contact their local Audi dealer.

Just a heads up for all the petrol heads that oooh'd and aaah'd at galwaytt's write up last year.

The Audi Sportscar experience is back again in 2010 but with a twist.

Instead of Mondello - its now in the Nurburgring.

Instead of September - its now in July.

Instead of 92 places its now limited to 26. Places strictly limited.

See here for info and how to book. New RS5 Coupe features alongside R8 V10.

Sounds great, would be better if there was more driving and less dinner/casino though :) Also I think the Nurburgring is so daunting that I doubt you'd be pushing as hard as you would at Mondello.

If I was spending that amount of money on a driving experience I think I'd do something at

For flights, transfers, one nights stay, food and a days driving around an F1 track in a combined 975 horsepower - its a bargain!

The casino part is only a filler Brian - only one days possible I'm afraid.

Looks like it would be a great experience, but a bit on the pricey side.

I'd imagine that VW group Ireland will struggle to get 25 on this. They should just raffle them off to A3 customers

    a) what makes you think I have any Audi connections?

    b) I am the best contributor every month, so I can see there being accusations of vested interests etc.

Don't worry, I'll take loads of photos! :P:D

Just a wild guess Chris ;)

If E92 was around he'd give you a good run for your money. Although he'd probably prefer the BMW version

Indications are looking like there will be more applicants than places, but just wished to give everyone here prior notice following galwaytt's experience last year.

We did run a competition for a free place in the weekend edition of the Indo 3weeks ago. Hope you all entered! :D

What a dilema that would be! Maybe an assesment centre will be needed to select the best candidates :pac::pac::pac:

I think I might try and get a spot on the list, would love to get round the ring in something special (went round in a 525i before) I had the R8 V10 for a couple of days last month and its just as good on the main road. It got a little too much attention though, kids hanging out the windows of cars with camera phones etc.

Seriously thinking of ordering the RS5 in for Jan 11, makes the S5 look very expensive now. The new colour Suzuka Grey is very very nice with the darkened 5 spoke 19's. Saw it in Munich 3 weeks back, awesome looking car.

I'm definitely doing this next year.

As for this year I will be returning from the 'ring on the 4th July so I dont think I should do it twice in a fortnight!

Currently have 19 people on the waiting list and are looking into a second day!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,596 ✭✭✭RedorDead

So we ended up bringing 42 people last week over two days and left another 24 at home on the waiting list. :D Brilliant three days all in all and all went to plan apart from a couple of weather related travel days which are unavoidable.

Didnt do Nordschliefe - just F1 circuit for now. Plan is to return to Nordschliefe next year for a two day course and to take an RS5 around it.

No lap times on the F1 circuit officially timed. Although some guys were lapping around 2 mins 20. Top speed hit was 231km/h in an R8 V10 coming up to final chicane before start finish straight. Couple of pics here.

We'll do it all again somewhere else in 2011.

    DSC00035.jpg

The V8 in the RS5 makes a sweeeeet sound. That rumble is addictive.

    DSC00024.jpg

Some last minute advice from one of the instructors Stefan - very capable instructors that really drive the pace up in the afternoon.

    DSC00021.jpg

We ate Pirellis for lunch ..... lots of them :D Especially on the R8 V10

    DSC00019.jpg

This nearly flat right sweep led into the quickest part of the 5.1km circuit down to the chicane

    DSC00016.jpg

Didnt think id love the RS5 in Misano Red - but it suits it so well.

Ha ha - would you believe I only saw that in the picture now - blinkers or what :o

Their branding there is very visible though - bordering on overkill - the whole straight has M Power signs the whole way along it. Between that and the Mercedes arena section of the track theres no avoiding them.
