It has been suggested to me if we vote yes to the Lisbon Treaty Turkey will then be allowed to enter into Europe and we would be then Swamped by Muslims, can this be true ?

Not even slightly. It's a scare tactic that you can expect to see again and again, but Lisbon makes no difference to Turkish entry to the EU, except possibly by setting the bar a little higher by bringing in things like the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Turkey could at some point enter the EU, regardless of what happens with Lisbon, but I think would need to be voted on by Member States

as for "swamped by muslims", I think that if Turkey was a MS their citizens would have the right of free travel like everyone else, however, indidiual states could decide policy on working/social welfare etc

Check out post of the day - It's a long one but read through to the end. It's pretty informative!

No, Turkey doesn't have anything to do with a Yes or No.

It is no sure thing that they will be let join and even if they did, it is a long time away.

Not to mention that some EU states would have a major problem with Turkey joining so nothing is certain by any means. And that still assumes that Turkey can clean up their act.

Read the link above though it's a goody.

There's already plenty of Muslims in Ireland (hint: they don't all look like Bedouin Nomads and fly planes into buildings)

Well, Turkish accession can happen whether you vote Yes or No. I'd be rather surprised if we get a repeat of the last couple of years out of it, though. For that to happen we'd need all these to be the case:

    1. the Irish economy to be booming so much that we'd reached full employment

    2. restrictions to be put in place on free movement of Turks after entry

    3. Ireland to be the only country to derogate from those restrictions in favour of Turkey

Of those 3 points, number 2 is virtually certain, but the other two are pretty unlikely. Mind you, it's possible that by 2023 (which the Economist magazine reckons is the earliest possible date for Turkish accession even assuming everyone dropped their objections) the Irish economy will be booming again. Who knows?

The Turks are more likely to go to Germany, though.

    cordially,

Guys wise up. Lisbon allows for more states to join.

Turkey is one of the main contenders which Brussels continue to have accession talks with against the majority of euopeans who are against their accession.

This is fact. So stop dismissing Turkey as a very real possiblity.

Its more possible that Turkey will join the EU than voting yes will create jobs here.
