Does anyone remember the above mentioned cinemas at the back of the shopping centre in the late 70's/early 80's? The entrance to both was at the corner of the centre facing where BC Electric is currently situated and adjacent to the petrol station. One was slightly larger than the other hence the names. At the time they were regarded as small but luxurious cinemas, comfortable and roomy.

I personally don't remember them as I only moved here in the mid-90's but my neighbour has reminisced about them recently. The two of us actually went over to Tesco's to ask about them and we were very kindly shown what is now a double storeroom but given their shape and size could well have been the cinemas. The Tesco employee who showed us around doesn't remember them but he said that doesn't mean they weren't there.

Any feedback or recollections would be much appreciated.

    Cheers :D

Saw BMX Bandits featuring Nicole Kidman as a young actress and Santa Claus the movie here. The cinema was still smoking at that time I remember too. Must have been 25 years ago now though!

Thanks for the replies so far; hopefully I'll get a few more. Next week I'll be upstairs in the library and I'm going to search old copies of the local papers to see if I can find a report on its opening and hopefully a pic or two.

Anyone remember a film that I saw in that cinema in 1977, I think it was, " The Town that Feared Sundown"? 0r it may have been "The Town that Dreaded Sundown"

I went to 'Grease' in the Casino when it came out..followed by many more over the years. remember there were all these bubble things floating around the screen before the movie would start. A magnified dead fly was stuck on it for ages:).
I saw 'Gone With The Wind' with my nan in the Magnet. It was grand 'cos the seats were on a slant. In one of the Adelphi rooms they were almost on the level, I could never see over the heads.
The Adelphi holds the best memories for me in all tho'. When we were heading up town through that wee street that takes you from Park Avenue to the square, we'd be running ahead to see the little pictures that'd be outside on the cinema walls showing pics of the film being shown. The Disney ones like 'Snow White' were my favourites.

So I was upstairs in the reference library today and dug out some old Democrat newspapers. After a bit of investigation I can reveal that the Casino and the Casino Mini opened on December 20, 1975. 8 pm opening, 80p entrance fee. The two shows were: The Towering Inferno & The Godfather 2.

Next week I will endeavour to find when they closed.

Went to see The Princess Bride there in about 1987. Talk about feeling old!! Can't remember much about the actual cinema though.
First film i ever saw in the Adelphi was Batman. Didn't real know what was going on but i love the film now.

Good detective work there Mod9Maple :-) From memory it was just due to lack of numbers that they closed down. I think that the Adelphi had a refurb as well. Going to guess that I saw Living Daylights in Adelphi so maybe a close time of 1989 or so??

My neighbour who started this search with his memories reckons 1987 so '87, '88 & '89 are where I'll start the search. :)

Just thinking that the Living Daylights was 87 and not 89 so am changing my mind to 87!
