Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Crashed last week first time in 6 years, off work back hurts.

What i would say is bikes are no more dangeroous than guns but put them in the hands of people who dont know how to use them and theres the problem.

I would implore you to get proper training before you ever get out on a public road.

The first year is the most dangerous, practice makes perfect.

They are dangerous due to the lack of protection around you that a car can offer. If you get lessons/training you will be taught how to observe and look out for danger so you can take the necessary action to avoid it. One thing to remember is that you could have all the training in the world, but all it takes is one numpty in a car not concentrating on the road properly to take you down out of no fault of your own.

Everything in life is dangerous bro.

Always wear your Leathers/protective gear and lid, EVEN if you're just poppin to the shops and keep your wits about you at all times and you'll be grand.

wear really good jacket and protective trousers or you may need skin grafts in the future.

    Gravel is not your friend.

If u think that bikes are dangerous, dont ride them.
You need confidence to ride them.
Look after the bike, servicing it regular, paying attention to tyres, brakes, chain, wheel bearings, oil.
Then ride it as if you think everyone else on the road is trying to kill you, and if they dont get you, the council will try get you by putting gravel, loose chippings on the roads, then if they dont get you, the farmers with their tractors and muck will also try get you.
You just need to think ahead and stay focused to stay alive.

I have never met anyone (honest that is) that had not been off the bike at least once if they had owned a bike for any reasonable lenght of time.

They certainly are dangerous but if you decide to get one you have a responsability to yourself other road users your family and friends to respect this danger and to ride the bike as carefully as possible.

A short story here (mind this could easily have happened in a car)

When myself and a friend of mine were 17/18 we were working long hours and also socialising a lot. We were coming home from somewhere about 12 miles journey very late at night and rain and sleet was coming down sideways and full blast into our faces. Regardless of this I was falling asleep on the back of the bike but not too worried as I was waking up when you fall backwards a little.
Unfortunately it did not occur to me that my pilot was also having 40 winks.
About half a mile from home he used a wall as an alarm clock and we crashed. We were okay but I had a nice gash on my helmet.
I tell this story just to point out what I think is an unusual way to crash on a motor bike. I am sure more experienced bikers have more tales to tell.

Respect the bike, road and other road users and most of all be lucky.

The guys that suggested training above are giving good advice.

I broke 6 ribs and almost killed myself in a car crash 10 years ago. Riding bikes foe over 20 years and broke my toe last year in my first accident involving a fracture. Conclusion Bikes are safer. :)

You can't really ask if they are dangerous, everything is dangerous, it's all relative. Just get the proper gear, a small bike at first and the proper training to allow you to go ride safely & confidently.

Bikes like guns, are not dangerous, it's the people that are in control of them.

This was already done here previously, a simple search () would have thrown up this thread.

Problem with this is that you will get 90% of the same stuff again, and the other 10% is discussing the other thread anyway :D

It's simple. If you drive a bike like an idiot, you're going to become a statistic.

If you drive one sensibly, you'll probably be ok.

Bikes are dangerous, make no mistake. Your chance of being seriously injured or killed goes up significantly on a bike. You have to accept this and drive defensively.

However, if you look at biker guards, they are not being killed on a daily basis even though they drive all day every day.

The fact that you are worried about safety is a good start. Lessons are a must.
