What's the query for latitude/longitude in the eircode file? Is it GEOGRAPHIC or
    GEODIRECTORY_LOOKUP ?
    What's the positional resolution?
I know of 2 rural semi-d cottages with the doors beside each other, so if the doors are 3' and a jack wall of 1', the letterboxes are 4' apart

How will those addresses get their eircodes delivered correctly? if the eircode delivery person stands slouching to their favoured side, the separation will be lower, and the likelihood of error greater.

When is the geodirectory going to be updated with the latest postal addresses before the eircodes are sent out?

If you read the product guide it will answer all those questions for you.

The geo's are centroid. So the coordinates don't point to the letter box, they point to the centre of the building.

It would really be a worth while exercise for people to have a proper read of the product guide.

The product guide seems not to be freely available. I can not agree to all of the terms and conditions capita want me to to register to download the product guide. Particularily
post content or initiate communications which are ... embarrassing to any other person as determined by us in our sole discretion

So, another courier delivery today, arrived after the usual couple of phone calls to find our house by a process of iteration - turn at the old church, pass the cottage with the green door and mad terrier etc.

Me "So these new postcodes will be a great help to you"
    Courier "Wha?"
Me "They'll give you the exact location on your SatNav "
Courier "Don't want to get one of them, I'd be forever stopping to look at directions. I'd rather phone for directions"

    There's no helping some people!

To some people they will be useless. They're easily spotted. Mid 60's, glasses still from the old health board, Father Jack sense of style, usually found driving in the middle of the road at 60 km/h. The type of person who thinks that the VHS recorder and fax machines are the zenith of technology and they haven't caught on to all that compuuuther malarkey and shure it's only rubbish anyway. "Who needs a computer when I can fix my old Escort with a hammer, a pliers, a rusty screwdriver and baling twine!"
Sometimes found at steam rallies saying "Oh, the new one is out!"

Genius.... Presumably he has an idea where he's going before he rings (it's not like he's on the East coast phoning you on the West coast) so he'd only need to look at it for the last mile or so. If he works for a courier company, it's likely they would look to invest in them for their drivers. It's a catch-22. Postcodes don't exist as yet so he can't see the benefit of them in his job....

Someone is doing market research on whether people know about Eircode, how well they've been informed and whether they're pro/anti them. Could be Capita, the Department or a losing bidder for all I know.

    I'd say 90% don't know and couldn't give a sh*te.

Not as sh*te as what we currently have:

    Sam Spud
    The Boreen Road
    The Arsehole of Nowhere
    Co Cavan

Maybe, but we could have done so much better. Poor design, and not meeting any of the design goals set. And not even launching on time, after decades of kicking the can (of worms) down the road..

    Perhaps he doesn't speak English.

Might be a bit difficult for him to phone for directions then.
Courier "Don't want to get one of them, I'd be forever stopping to look at directions. I'd rather phone for directions"

At least with a satnav, you can choose the language.

Are postcodes not dead in the water thanks to the Irish Water fiasco and an election coming up ?

Funny we were discussing this at home last night, the only thing I can see scuppering a May launch is the fact that the general public is not aware of it. Nobody I know is aware of this.
And there are a lot of people in Dublin going to be very upset about losing their postcode, we'll see people writing "Dublin 6W" and "Dublin 4" as their address before their eircode for years to come.

I live right on the border between D24 and D16 which means there's a good chance we'll all share the same routing code. There'll be a lot of upset people about it.

Someone in the Dail will get angry calls from their Donnybrook constituents and will try to call a halt to the whole thing.

The routing code part of Dublin Eircodes will be based on the existing Dublin postal districts.

If you live in Dublin 24 now, the first part of your Eircode will be D24. If you live in Dublin 4 now, the first part of your Eircode wil be D04, etc, etc. Even Dublin 6W will be retained.

Have there been large public marches protesting against the introduction of Eircodes?

Are any of the political parties making an issue of Eircodes? Are any of them them opposed to Eircodes?

The next general election will be held about one year from now, in the spring of 2016.

Right. If there's a holdup, it's due to the usual laziness, incompetence and lack of funding. Unless it's something big and glittering to garner votes, the Irish government (no matter who that may be) couldn't give a flying sh*te.
They just want big, glittery shiny campaigns to get votes and if the country actually works it's juts a happy coincidence. None of them cares a fig beyond their own arse.

    No.

Irish water have nothing to do with postcodes. It will make your bill find the right home though, but it will also make your deliveries arrive to the correct house.

In a world drivin by online markets in the future, it is essential for your home to be located .
Driving around a townland looking for Mrs Browns house is not acceptable for delivery companies anymore.

Time to bring us out of the stone age.

Election marketing's about as non-targeted as it comes! They just push unaddressed junk through every letterbox.

Although to be honest, I'm not that annoyed by electoral stuff as a lot of people aren't really reachable any other way.

It's more the large wad of supermarket fliers I get through the door all the time that I never read and I put straight into the recycle bin. Also, huge catalogues from a certain stationary company that keep arriving no matter what I do.

Targeted marketing at least might be a bit more relevant than just chucking a huge pile of paper through a letterbox and hoping it's vaguely of interest to someone inside.

It's environmentally less damaging too if it's at least focused.

Ah yes, it'll be any day now.
    Try this link
..Minister Ryan said he expects new postal codes with digits and letters to be introduced in 2011.
In 2005, the then Minister for Communications, Noel Dempsey, promised a new system by 2008.
Oops! that one is out of date :D
Lets see if we can find another...
