Im not sure it is even if you could pick from all players playing today because I think messi, iniesta and xavi are the 3 best players at retaining possession in the world today but ill have a go anyway

    Maicon vidic rio evra

    mascherano

    fabregas arshavin

    ronaldo ribery

    Drogba

Vidic should not be a side that is being picked for its footballing abilities.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,152 ✭✭✭Idu

Better team or better footballing side? You have a few suspect choices if it's the latter.

this team from the premier last year looks a nice side footballing wise

    johnson-rio-agger-evra

    torres-arshavin

What would you have a CB do? Vidic is the best in his position.

Its really from midfield up that matters

but he is not the best footballing centre half around.

not sure they'd be much use without a goalkeeper...

Carvalho for best footballing defender in the world ahead of vidic in this team every day of the week and also one of the best defenders around IMO.

I would also be interested in what players past and present you could add to the current barca team that would make them better, I would replace toure with Makelele and Ibrahimovic with Drogba

But Vidic is the kind of player that will let your team play football by breaking up the opposition. Not to mention his ability in the air. If you want your team to play flowing football, then you must have someone in your team to do the dirty work. Vidic is the man for that...

Did they play yesterday? How many did they concede? Those are the defenders you'd pick out of all the world?

Do you wanna know how much they conceded throughout last season? One bad day out means nothing.

they conceded the exact same amount as Chelsea.

One bad day and you are gona claim that vidic and rio arent the best centre back pairing in the world, and that evra isnt one of the best left backs int he word either

But they created a new record in the process. And why does chelsea have to come in this anyway? We are talking about individuals who'd go well in a team. I rate chelsea's defense very highly.IMO any of Terry, Vidic, Rio or Carvalho can make a world XI and the team wouldn't suffer. But Vidic is the best of the lot.

You can't play with two "Footballing" centre halfs. You need one bruiser, stick-the-head anywhere type, and one who can play football, and start passing movements from deep.

Vidic is the best "bruiser" type playing in the EPL at the moment.

Although, Vermaelen looks to be a very good hybrid of the two, going on performances this season.

    Buffon
    Maicon Vidic Ferdinand Evra
    Ronaldo Lampard Alonso Gerrard
    Torres Villa

I would also be interested in what players past and present you could add to the current barca team that would make them better,

maldini, baresi, platini, maradona, pele, ronaldo (brazilian).

    to name a few.

you don't think Carvalho & Fedinand could play together?

or Fedinand & Gallas? Ferdinand & Agger?

all better footballing centre halves than vidic.

    personally i think they could.

I agree, my 1st choice would be Carvalho and insert other world class defender here.

IMO carvlho has a perfect package of tough defending mixed with great reading of the game and a willingness to get forward passed the midifeld when he can.

    Carvalho ftw.

That team would be domintaed by barce, you need 5 in midfield against them and 2 out and out strikers is a big no no

But none of those combinations will be as effective as Vidic - Rio or Carvalho-Vidic

I would also be interested in what players past and present you could add to the current barca team that would make them better

    Van Basten
Best player in the world at the time, career ruined by injuries. (Imagine him and Romario up front, the other 9 players are largely irrelevant :-D)

    Roy Keane
Whatever your opinion of him, he was a machine.

(Also, I'm not saying he would definitely have improved this current team, but I would love to have seen Alan Shearer playing abroad for a few years)

Ronaldo has never been good at reataing possesion or keeping hold of the ball.

And no, you could not make a better footballing side than Barcelonas in term of keeping keeping possesion & moving the ball because no other team has Xavi in it & nobody can do what Xavi dose.

It may not beat them footballing wise but this team would beat them

    Schmeichel

    Cafu vidic stam maldini

    Makele

    Keane Zidane

    Ronaldo(new) Ronaldionho

    Ronaldo(old)

You dont need to go old to get a team that would beat them.

    Reina
    Johnson-Carvalho-Vidic-Evra
    Gerrard--Fabregas-Lampard
    Ronaldo--Torres--Ribery

Reina? Is he the best GK atm? I'll say Buffon, Casillas and even Given would come ahead of him...

The midfield needs someone like Essien or a fit Hargreaves

It's hard to put together a side that would be better than them in term's of footballing ability, but they are certainly beatable, you don't need to put together a team of the best players of the past 10 year's:confused:, remember it took a miracle for them to get past Chelsea last year

    Casillas
Sergio Ramos - Pepe - Raul Albiol - Marcello
    Lass Diara - Xabi Alonso
    Ronaldo - Kaka
    Benzima - Higuain

    Buffon

    Ramos, Carvalhio, Ferdinand, Evra

    Silva, Alonso, Essien, Ribery

    Torres, Rooney

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,370 ✭✭✭✭8-10

    Stuy

    Krol
    Blankenburg

    ---Suurbier
    Hulshoff

    Haan
    Neeskens

    Mühren
    Keizer

    Cruijff

    Swart

I realise it looks like a complicated 4-2-4 formation but in reality it was total football. If you watch old videos of that attacking 4 (6) you'll see football played that Barca today could only dream of.

I really don't want to take away from the current Barca team because they do play astonishingly good football at times but if you honestly want to see a team that gives them a run for their money football-wise, watch the above lineup for Ajax in the 1972 European Cup Final v Inter....beautiful.

Yeah, you could stick Buffon or Casillas in there alright.

I only selected Reina because I was trying to make it up with prem players but got stuck in the attack.

Tbh anyone is going to be better than Valdes and the above defence dominates the Barca defence also, whatever about attacking wise you could make it extremely hard for them to score.

    Footballing side

    Reina

    Maicon
    Bougherra
    Carvalho

    Wilshire
    Alonso
    Ribery

    Villa
    jovetic

Pretty long list mate in fairness.

Maradona, Pele, Puskas, Georgie Best, Duncan Edwards, Beckenbauer, old Ronaldo, Platini, Maldini, Baresi, di Stefano, Eusebio, Roy Keane, Zidane etc etc etc for pages and pages

    Given

    Dunne---St. Ledger
    O'Shea
    Kilbane
    Andy Reid
    McGeady
    Hunt
    Keane---Doyle---Duff

Totally, the team would just automatically evolve around his every touch in a clockwise and counter clockwise plethora of passing and keeping the ball high up in the oppositions half because all Irish teams should be doing their stuff like that and Andy Reid is the greatest passer of a ball bar Kaka and sure, it'd be bleedin' better than the midfield we have now because at least we'd have someone bleedin' in there wha'?

    Coat. Actually. Bed.

That team would get beat 5-2, 4-1, 3-0 and the like ALOT.

Crazy how Sunderland have the worlds 2nd best passer, great coup.
