Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

RTÉ - A Catholic Channel?

Hello, this is a spin-off query from a debate in A&A on the subject of The Angelus. I was wondering, since RTÉ so clearly endorse one religion, do you believe this is fair on other faiths whose followers live in Ireland? Does RTÉ make you feel represented? Would you like to see the Adhan broadcasted on RTÉ? Or would you rather the channel becomes secular, though not strictly non-religious?

Hi, I have only read the first few pages of the thread, so I hope I haven't missed any important points in the last pages.

For me, as long as the Angelus keeps ringing, it is like the canary singing down in the mine. I'm happy to hear it. Because I think the day they stop playing the Angelus will be a bad day for Muslims.

Mainly because although the intention behind removing it might be to make the broadcaster less exclusivist, and more fair and representational, the result will be that it will be regarded by the majority of traditional Catholics as having been axed in order to kow-tow to them 'mozlems' who can't see any other religion without getting offended, and 'they'd never let us practice our religion over there'. It'd be political correctness gone mad, Ted. For the same reason, I would not be in favour of the Adhan being broadcast on RTE. We can get it easily on several satellite chanels anyway when we want it.

Inevitably, this will lead to increased resentment towards Muslims with who knows what consequences. If it was only myself, I mightn't worry too much, but I have my kids to think of.

Another thing is that to be honest, any bit of religion for its own sake being acknowledged as a part of national life is good imho. I wouldn't like to see it taken away no matter what the religion might be. How to resolve that with the possible offence it causes to secular people, I don't know.

Ireland is a Catholic country so I have no problems with the Angelus. I don't particularly want to see the Adhan broadcast either, it would not serve any purpose. What I would like to see though is programs to educate Irish people about other religions.
