Have to agree. It started off as a decent program with some very well written episodes. Far better than the normal mainstream sitcom.

But its yet another sitcom that is running on fumes at the moment. No new ideas, no direction and important for a sitcom no laughs. Don't think Ive chucked once at this new series.

As for the premise that Ted is telling his kids all these inconsequential stories as a build up to eventually them HOW HE MET THEIR MOTHER.

Shark well and truly jumped. Another sitcom whose purpose now is to be a safe bet for the network moneymen.

Last Cigarette Ever was pretty damn funny. Def the best episode since season 3. Anyone agree?

I think the playbook has been the best episode of this series so far.
Oh and this very brief scene

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭token56

I've basically watched all the episodes in about 3 and half days. I was really loving it for the first few seasons, some really great episodes. But the last season just doesn't seem right. Its just feels like its dragging out at this stage, like scrubs did in season 5/6 and later. I'd prefer it to just end on a high at this stage i think

Edit: The only thing i am looking forward to is slap #5. I think slap 3 has been the best so far

'Last Cigarette Ever' and 'The Playbook' do stick out in my mind as the 2 best episodes of this season... but I do agree Season 5 is weaker than the other seasons... however, it's still one of the best comedies out there and I think it will pick up again...

Marshall is slowly but surely becoming funnier than Barney... I love them both... Jason Segal was the reason I started watching the show though, with him being a Freaks and Geeks alumni... Alyson Hannigan also had a part to play, being a Buffy alum... wasn't really familiar with Neil Patrick Harris prior to that apart from a few things like Starship Troopers and Harold and Kumar... The other two, I'd never even heard of...

I started watching this on E4 a few months ago and have just caught up with this now. Has anyone noticed that the 'laughter' seems to have gotten louder and is far more intrusive this season? Not sure if it is canned or if it is filmed in front of an audience but I didn't really notice it before and in fact didn't think there was any until I went back to check and was surprised to hear it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭beanyb

It is generally weaker this season, but I did think 'Last Cigarette Ever' was hilarious. That and The Playbook were great. I'm hoping they can keep up the standard of 'Last Cigarette Ever' from now on.... it's unlikely, but I'm still going to hope!

I was really disappointed with the Slapsgiving episode this season... they wasted a precious slap for that?

The 100th episode tonight expect big musical numbers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,327 ✭✭✭Nasty_Girl

i really like this show, but it be called "a bunch of stuff that happened" or "memoirs of a something or other".

Why would the kids want to sit there and listen to their dad talking about how bad he wanted to bone his friend who ended up f**king their other friend and such.

Other than that I think it's a good show!

Theres meant to be a huge reveal of the mother tonight aswell apparently. Although that means nothing really, they'll just find some way of kinda telling us but not actually.

Any chance of spoilerifying anything to do with episodes not yet aired? Some of us like to watch stuff without knowing in advance what's going to happen.

Just watched it there. Good episode

Talking about the episode so :
I was sure we were going to find out the mother there. It must be the final episode of this season. The musical shouldnt have been pasted all over the internet considering it was a very good part of the episode. Was good to see the yellow umbrella being brought in.

    What you people think?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

I don't think there's going to be a big reveal until after they've been given notice of cancellation tbh.

And theres no chance of that happening anytime soon, its numbers have been impressive again this year.

No need to spoiler things about the already-aired episode IMO, just any facts about future episodes...

I really enjoyed the musical bit, but I specifically stayed away from watching it on various sites earlier in the week - it really would take away from the episode to have seen the whole thing in advance, as it was easily the best part of the whole episode. Didn't care much for Ted again and the whole mother search... the more it stays in the background, the better...

Think the show has run it's course at this stage. Barney is the one saving grace. If it wasn't for his character I'd have quit a good while back. Loved the musical number.

I'd agree a little, but it hasn't plunged below the surface yet IMO. The last season and a half hasn't been great but it's not been bad either. I'm happy enough for it to keep going, it's a nice way to pass the time. The ratings are holding up well so there must be a fair amount of people who feel similarly.

Who was the actress who played the mother's flatmate? She looks really familiar but I can't place her.

Yer one from that teen show. What was it, The OC? Fairly sure that's her.

Haven't seen the episode yet but was her name Cindy? If so, it was Rachel Bilson (formerly of 'The OC').

I wish I hadnt known the musical number was going to happen. I still enjoyed it, but it would have been better if it had been just completely out of the blue like 'Let's go to the Mall' was. I was just waiting for it to happen. I liked that they got Alyson Hannigan to sing, even if it was only briefly.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Ah, yes, Chuck (and a photo in the ladies lounge where she's barely a metre tall...)

She really is a terrible terrible singer. Fair play to her though.

I really hope they reveal the Mother soon and finish the last few seasons with her as part of the group. That'd be awesome.. Hopefully its not a case of the show just gets cancelled, and then they rush towards the conclusion..

But i do think this an awesome show. At first i really didn't like it at all, mainly because i found Ted to be just such a whiney, annoying character. But he and the show have really grown on me,particuarly because of Neil Patrick Harris. My only criticism would be that there's just not enough of Jason Siegal, i really think he's the unsung hero of the show.

i was thinking maybe they do introduce the mother but have ted meet her and date her for a season or 2, and just as he proposes to her, he tell us thats how he meet there mother,

so itll be like shes not the mother untill ted proposes,

all these hint are really buggin me, do they even know how many seasons of the show there will be, cause i really wanna know who the mother is, not see her in the final ep,

also that musical number was legendary, :D, they should do a spin-off with barney when this show ends, NPH was born to play barney,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 23,316 ✭✭✭✭amacachi

I'd be surprised if the show was being cancelled if they didn't get a good 10 episodes notice, it would take an catastrophic drop in ratings for it to be cancelled out of the blue.

It was in fact good enough to almost make me want to give Dr. Horrible another go.

    Almost.

This season has been pretty disappointing but guess what, we get an episode that focuses on Barney and its great again! Who would have thought ? ;)

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I thought it was very weak again. They don't sem to have any intention of leaving the comfort-zone they're in, just plodding along with the same rehashed non-story week after week.

Thought it was another good episode this week...

The joys of syndication... :( I enjoyed this one (Barney-centric episodes are always good) but I do agree, they simply use the same basic ideas all the time. Unfortunately, that's typical of most US shows that go on way longer than ever intended, just for the syndication deals...

Dang, wanna watch this now but have to go to J-lesson. Will check it out on return. Hope this episode picks things up. Been on a slide lately. More Barney dammit!

the very poor mans friends. i like the way they got joey and chandler and mashed them together and cast the psychic from starship troopers as him. i watched like 10 episodes in a row of this and only after 3/4 episodes did i figure out who the main character was.
crap, trashy show with poor writing and weak & unbelievable characters. if this is the equivalent of friends today then it really proves how far comedy has gone down the toilet in the past 7/8 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Friends is the new comedy barometer? I fear I grow old...

Anyway, more Barney needed. Let's dump the rest of the cast! :)

Maybe, and this is just a long-shot, but maybe television isn't your thing?

um, it was? the first 5/6 series of friends were a billion times funnier then this piece of garbage program. the characters had depth and structure and were far more believable (yes, still unbelievable but you could understand them being friends...)

even still, the point i was making was that if this is todays equivalent of friends then comedy on tv must be in a shocking state of affairs compared to when friends was in its heyday. something a mod of creative writing would have gotten in my expectations, unless you didnt want to hurt your sensibilities :)

case in point. look at this how i met your mothers fan sense of humour. a poor under-realised smug joke... the exact type you find in this garbage program

No way. I think Jason Segal and Alyson Hannigan are superb... If they got rid of Robin I wouldn't really care... and Ted can be funny at times...

Jazzy: Did you watch from the start of season 1, or just jump in at the start of season 5?

Its a very well made show where the characters have tons of depth if you've been with it since the start. If you jumping in to a show that's 5 seasons in, you're going to find it hard to connect. Lots of in-jokes, character traits, relationship history etc. form the basis for alot of the humour, and will cloud your opinion of the show if you're new to it. What's funny to a long term fan might just seem stupid to you if you "don't get it".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,591 ✭✭✭Tristram

Just to clarify my own position I'm not claiming HIMYM is high art. It is what it is and I have enjoyed a lot of it. I do think it's gone downhill quite a bit and that it's taken wrong turns but I also find Barney and his storylines pretty damn funny. I think the writers should go motors ahead with Barney. The rest of the characters have grown quite stale for me. Would also point out that I don't think it's character driven at all. Simple premises for most episodes that don't see much character development but it works for what it is.

    Friends was ****e btw :D

    In-jokes, yes.
    Character traits, yes.
Relationship history, yeah but not the reason I watch it.
Still not a bad show altogether, eh? :)
