Anybody finding that some contractors seem to be adding the grant to the price for any works they are doing under the HES scheme. I have come across one or two around here!!

the specification for works under the HES is fairly detailed.

If comparing prices you would need to ensure the same specification is adhered to.

for example, attic insulation installation may seem like a small job to some, but the HES spec calls for the following:

    1. continuous ventilation to be maintained. ventilation trays may need to be installed
    2. air tight membrane to be installed at ceiling level
    3. heavy duty cables may need to be ducted.
    4. downlighters require permanent vented non combustible protection
    5. pipework and tanks to be checked for leaking
    6. attic pipework and tanks are all to be insulated
    7. attic hatch to be insulated
    8. attic hatch to be draught proofed.
    9. permanent boarded walkway to be provided from attic access to water tanks.
    10. obviously, attic to be insulated to achieve 0.16 u value

Very true Syd, it is a fairly good spec although the airtightness membrane is only reccomended not mandatory, which is just as well as it would cost a fortune. The reason i ask is that it seems that contractors are pricing as per the grant and then giving a reduced price for no grant, most likely with a reduced spec as there is no possibility of any oversight IMO.

Just wondering how this would be retrofitted? Doesn't seem like something that would be all too easy to do.
How much of a difference do you think it would make if it was done?

I'm not an expert but as the installation is very labour intensive, I would think that the price is highly dependent on the structure, roof make-up and whether a warm or cold roof is being specified.
