Where to get good 2nd hand Mountain bike?

Mate of mine wants to get into mountain biking, I used to do loads a few years back so I said I'd help him. He was going to spen 300-400 on a new bike in halfords etc but I told him he was nuts. Much better spending that or maybe up to 500 on a second hand bike, few years old but would have cost several times that when new.

Where is a good place to try to find a decent used bike that would have been well looked after? Probably a hardtail would be best but FS will be considered.
