    Hello,

I am in my second week of Art and Design in LIT, but am considering dropping out and doing the course again next year. Does anybody know if I will have to pay fees for the entire year if I drop out now, or is there a time-limit given by the CAO in which you can change your mind without having to pay fees?

Yes, I think you have up until end of October to drop-out and not have to pay fees next year. Speak to your tutor about what options you have.

Sorry, just want to clarify things:

If I drop out before October I will not have to pay this year's fees.

If I decide to take up my place again next year I will not have to pay fees, even if the government introduces them for first years next year? I am aware that currently I will be obliged to pay fees in my second year. Will the situation stay the same if I drop out this year, or will I have to pay from first year onwards?

The 30th of october is the closing date for withdrawing for "free fee tuition" and also for deferring till next year, the 22nd January is the closing date for withdrawal with "half fees tuition". However, the government has set out that fees are applicable from 2010/2011 academic year for students starting this year and after so I cant see how dropping out early this year would make any difference to you paying fees next year. Youre still going to have to pay them. The only people it doesnt affect are those of us already in college.
So if youre worried about saving money, its obviously wiser to hang in there for the free fees this year and you will at least save yourself a year of fees. Youre going to face them the year after either way.

So unless you really dont think its for you, maybe no harm in giving it a shot.
