Growling in pipework in hotpress

    Hi there,

    We're in a house about 4 years old with a gas heating system. There's a feed pipe from the CHS into to the HotPress water tank. Recently it's started growling at different times (day and night). If we turn the value so that it's off - no water feeding from CHS the noise does not recur. It seems to be independent of wheather the heating has been on or not and water is heating as expected either via CHS or Immersion heater.

    We're in a hard water area but have a softener on the mains feed into the house. Any ideas?

    sounds like air in the system. when you close the valve you prevent the air from passing through the system and that is possibly why the noise stops.

    Hi Matron - thanks for reply. I'll check for cold tops on Rads and bleed where necessary this should sort any air in CHS right? And for the Cold Water Tank and hot press immersion tank itself any air should bubble away out (or come through a tap) by itself right?

    Some updates. Noise recurred later last night even with that valve closed. Seems to be more frequent in evening and night and we don't have heating on much at the moment.

    We initially thought it was a breeze or wind outside as it sounds like a whining breeze or smokes growling cough. It lasts from 5 to 10 secs only and maybe up to 5 times a day. More annoying thatn anything but a concern as to why it's just started recently!
