    Hey keps,
thanks, I think. I just started with my D40x last weekend(bought second hand). Managed to capture this character and his dog last weekend in Kerry. As I'm new to photography I'd like to know what you mean by been 1 inch from a classic. See if next time I can capture that "classic".

Sorry for seeming to ignore this - been at a few race meetings..:pac::pac:

    carrlingford lough.

lovely photo. but can i ask you - honestly - does that photo even remotely resemble the actual scene ????? i've been up in carlingford a few times and i've never seen anything so purple.

Why does it have to resemble the actual scene? I'm sure you've probably seen 100s of standard photos of the place. You have heard of filters right?

I'm guessing Calina's image is her interpretation of how she saw the Lough that evening. Sure it's not purple but why can't it be for that image.

lovely photo. but can i ask you - honestly - does that photo even remotely resemble the actual scene ????? i've been up in carlingford a few times and i've never seen anything so purple.

I'm inclined to say "even remotely" would suggest to me that I just got rid of everything and replaced with much better mountains and a lough and then messed around the colour.

If you're concerned about the colour cast, there is one and it comes because I stack 3 ND filters on top of each other to get effects in the water. I need the slow exposure and that's the price I pay. For what it's worth, the image is closer to what I would have expected to create if I was there at dawn and not when the sun disappeared behind the Cooley Mountains. That being said, the colours were not far off this in the original shot; the cast is slightly accentuated when I sorted out the black slider in Adobe Raw.
Why does it have to resemble the actual scene? I'm sure you've probably seen 100s of standard photos of the place. You have heard of filters right?

I would venture to add that the shot resembles Carlingford Lough very accurately. About the only messing I did was to straighten the horizon. Nothing got cloned out or added. So the main issue relates to the colour cast and nothing else. The actual composition is as is.

Shot of coffee cup and phone

Calina, is this an ironic shot? On another thread you mentioned that the winning picutes in a landscape competition had no soul. This picture to me has no soul, containing as it does, two of the most iconic symbols of Celtic tiger/corporate/modern life. just wondering ;)

And so it tells a story. It reflects the reality of daily life for a lot of people. Frankly it'd have been better if the coffee was from Starbucks and the phone was a Blackberry but I had to make do with what I had last night. It's not so much an ironic shot as "okay, WillyW has my tripod and I want to play with the 50mm 1.8. What can I take photographs of? Oh look...."

I'm not sure whether you'd call that irony, laziness, luck or whatever. The coffee wasn't mine anyway - I had to borrow it.

Ooh how I wish I could photograph this thing again

    4026349774_033a03204a.jpg

How does everyone else combat Flickr's sharpening btw? (apart from "don't use Flickr :pac:) Do the pro accounts let you turn it off? It always seems to go a step too far. [edit]Ooh it seems to be a compression thing, the larger sized images aren't half as bad. Guess I'll start uploading in 800px
