Won't be in Ireland to vote

I'm moving to the UK next week so I won't be around to vote in the Lisbon referendum. I heard you have to register a few months in advance in order to vote, if you're going to be out of the country? Is this absolutely true? Because I really do want to cast my vote this time round.
