    Thursday September 24 2009

TWO fishermen's organisations are taking opposing sides in the Lisbon Treaty referendum.

The Killybegs Fishermen's Organisation (KFO) is urging its members to vote 'Yes' in the forthcoming referendum, claiming the treaty offers better long-term prospects.

But its view is at odds with the recently revamped south west-based Irish Fishermen's Organisation, which claims fishermen are being driven out of business by Brussels' policies.

Sean O'Donoghue, chief executive of the KFO, said: "Voting 'No' for Lisbon is not going to change the CFP (Common Fisheries Policy), but if we vote 'Yes', there is a review of the CFP under way and members of parliament would have a say in this review which would be very important."

From today's indo. Seem like the fishing issue isn't as clear cut as the No campaigners claim.

In a not surprisingly move the IFO has said that a Lisbon YES vote would annihilate whats left of Irish fishing. This is not at all surprising considering the amount of damage that has already been caused by the EU to Irish fishing prior to this referendum.

And Irish fishing has been destroying Irish fish for a long time.

Whatever about EU intervention, Irish fisherman would quickly fish themselves out of a livelihood if left to their own devices.

Does he say how or why it will destroy the Irish fishing industry?

A little bit of surrounding context - the CFP is up for reform at the moment (you can have your say here). My own view is that an Irish No would put us in a very much worse position during the reform negotiations than a Yes - but of course that's that silly goodwill thing again, which is hardly important when we're talking about the End Of The World.
