Sackings by a Taoiseach

Just watching Reeling in the Years there and they showed Brian Lenhihan getting the boot from Haughey. Is that the last time a deputy has been sacked from a government party by the Taoiseach? When did it last happen before Lenihan?

It seems in the dodgy 80's people actually did get sacked (even for purely selfish reasons but still) whereas today no boat is rocked. Haughey had a motion of no confidence by his own parliamentary party in the early 80's, yet Ahern despite his antics at the Tribunals was left in situ untilo he was ready to resign. How things change eh!

Thanks for any info you have.

And Haughey himslef should never really have made Taoiseach. He sacked Lenihan after trying as hard to not sack him. It was a cas of absolutely had to, or else he was gone. There is pretty much zero transparency and accountability in Ireland, politics and other things.

Agreed, but isn't it amazing that Haughey felt the need to sack Lenihan to maintain power himself, in comparison to today when Cowen seems incapable of removing O'Donoghue from FF. They seem to have lost all fear of the electorate and that's saying something as it was corrupt as hell then as well.

Haughey sacked lenihan because he felt he had the support to do so and it was expedient. In the long run, it weakened him within FF.

Cowen may not have sacked O'Donoghue because (a) he doesn't want to (b) because he lacks support to do so or would be weakened (c) some combination of the two.

To be honest, this Coughlan one would be a better candidate for a change of career....

i think they should all get sacked - none of them have done anything productive and time after time have failed the public.

the amount of public money wasted has been highlighted time after time - and yet no-one has yet to be thrown to the lions.

if they were working for any business/company they would have been given no second or third chance.

Rody Molloy is not related to Biffo. Biffo's wife is a Molloy which is where people get confused and think they're related.
