Turntables help

Looking to purchase a turntable and some records for my father for his birthday but as I'm a child of the 90s I'm clueless as to what's available out there.

Where is the best place to buy one, and what do I actually need to buy (amps, speakers) in order to have a half decent set up?

Any tips, suggestions appreciated, thanks. :)

At a very basic level there's an ION Turntable that plugs into a PC via the USB. It's ok for converting LPs to digital but it's not really a system.

A 'proper' system for vinyl will have turntable into phono-stage into amp and onto speakers. If your dad already has CD/amp/speakers then all you'll need is a turntable and phono-stage.

Project do a range of great value decks and richer sounds have the Project 3 for €225 with a NAD PP2 phono amp for €60. Cloney Audio in Blackrock might have a bigger range of turntables but don't be tempted to go for cheaper ones. They're generally muck.

Good vinyl can be got new from Tower/Road and second hand from Spindizzy/Freebird.
