Yes voters: Once a treaty has been agreed should ratification be mandatory?

Once an EU treaty has been debated about, negotiated, and finalized by the Council of Ministers, should ratification be mandatory in all EU countries? Should it be possible for a state to reject the treaty? In fact, should we even bother having national ratification, or just let the council ratify on behalf of the states…

I prefer referendums, but if that had been constitutionally acceptable, there's no reason for me to object.
