I'm no DBA but I work with Oracle Apps

I would suggets going to any of the oracle forums as they are more specialized - also try get somewhere to take you on as a work placement if you have no experience

The user Tom_Dunne is an Oracle DBA as far as I know and he will probably know a lot more about this

That was true up to six weeks ago. :D

I started off in IT Helpdesk support, went on to 2nd level support and then specialised in Oracle databases. I had a number of jobs involving Oracle, including DBA, Data Warehousing, Oracle developer (specifically, PL/SQL) and then Oracle Consultant (which also branched into Oracle App server). I started off as a junior DBA, then worked my way along as I gained experience.

You need two things - experience and certification. The Oracle 10g certification consists of one mandatory 5-day course and three exams. Don't do what I did and assume you can pass the exams purely from reading a book/practicing exercises. You really, really need real world experience to pass the exams.

For now, I wouldn't recommend 11g simply because most places are either running 10g, or moving to 10g. You will only find a few places brave enough to go to 11g.

You can download the full Enterprise Edition database from Oracle and install it on a virtual machine to play around.

Any more questions, feel free to ask.
