passports required on ferry to UK?

I will be going on a group tour to Manchester with my kids next month. The kids passports have expired and I probably wont be able to get them renewed in time but as far as I understand it, you dont NEED passports as such to travel to the UK on a ferry, is this correct?
To confuse the issue a bit more, my wife is German and she was keen for the kids to have a german passport so for this reason the kids have their passport in her name, not mine.
Would this be a problem when travelling, if I am the only parent?

If your a UK or Irish citizen then you do not need a passport to travel between the two states, everyone else does though.
