That was exactly the joke I was trying to make. I guess "trying" is the operative word.

I'm sure monks decried the end of hand-written manuscripts when the printing press came along. I don't think the Trinity library is going to be demolished anytime soon. Bookshops will probably turn into coffee/reading shops, or porn shops, either way people will adapt.

Most paper is used to produce things that could easily be replaced by electronic copies:

    Newspapers, office printing, magazines, etc.

How many of you already use apps for magazines or view the Irish times online? Is it really as cold and sterile as the above image would suggest?

I see people crying for the loss of old libraries and the whiff of a freshly printed book. Why aren't you crying for the loss of trees that have lived for hundreds of years? 24 billion books are published in America each year, a lot of it will be recycled paper but that's an awful lot of paper.

I've probably spent more money on books than I have on bikes over the years. I have thousands of them.

And I found myself buying a magazine on a tablet for the first time the other day. Having said that, I can't see myself ditching books any time soon.

If I want to read a couple of articles, I'd certainly do it online. If I want to read the entire newspaper, I'd much prefer to have a paper one. Ditto for books. I find reading anything longer than 2,000 words or so on screen a bit tedious.

I've no doubt that the day will come when the technology will get to the point where reading on screen is as easy on the eye as print, but it isn't there yet.

E-ink sort of is. I considered buying a tablet instead of a kindle/laptop for reading, but I tried reading a sample of Millar's book on an ipad and just couldn't do it, a backlit screen is just not easy to read off. It's another advantage of kindle actually, you can read your book on other devices with the kindle app. I have heard that they will bring in a borrowing feature, where you can license your book to a friend for a short period, I don't know if this will ever make it to the light of day though.

Yeah, Kindle app on Android is what I have. Turning the pages to an off white colour and dimming the brightness helps.

My first job when leaving college was to write an application for the open ebook format. That was released in 1999, and I worked on it in 2001. I must root out the code, I presume it still runs, and I bet the books that I had as test data still work, but somehow I don't think the latest ones will.

I also like real books. I commissioned a interesting bookcase for my "Library" based on this picture I found (mine has a doorway "cut" into it) to hold my Grandparents' collection of books dating back to the 30's/40's. Some very interesting ones, as well as some erm, well that won't ever be read, but I just like the look of them.

But the start of Leeson St. is a contra flow lane and they have painted on what appears to be space for a bicycle lane :( confusion is here

Yes, but there is no way to reach it unless you walk your bike onto it. The contra flow lane along Stephen's green has no lane and is for buses only.

    Yup.

In a thread I posted before about it, I think Victor or someone mentioned how the bus lane there would be under review at some stage.

Yes, it's all very strange. I suppose the rule that cyclists can (and indeed must) cycle on a cycle track supersedes the rule that only buses can use a bus lane? So cyclists are allowed on the contraflow on Leeson Street, but not the one on Stephen's Green that leads to it.

Or, more probably, people who design the roads and immediate environs in Ireland are frequently busking it.

I feel your pain. I went sparring last night hungover. *shudder* I was dripping alcoholic sweat 30 seconds in.

Took the singlespeed out for it's first short spin today, just about 1km. 32mm tyres and narrower bars make for interesting cornering compared to the road bike.

Also put SPD-SL's on the road bike for the first time. Very quickly discovered that unlike SPDs, it's not possible to pedal without being clipped in, there's just no grip. Going out with Orwell tomorrow, expecting to look like a complete fred struggling with the pedals.

So overall expecting a few hairy moments on the bike(s) over the next 7 days...

It's totally possible with out being clipped in, you just have to find the sweet spot and remember where it is.
I've only had mine for a week though so I'm no expert on them.
