Personally in a race like this which is not chip-timed (i.e. you don't get an individualised time based on when you crossed the start-line) I use my own watch to measure my time...so there is no 'done thing', give yourself whatever time you think is accurate.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,492 ✭✭✭Woddle

I'd be a bit different here, I start my watch when I hear the gun regardless of where I lined up (when chip is not available) as it's a race after all but it's each to their own, my watch said 20'33 and the online results confirmed this.

I started my watch when I crossed the line. My time was 21:02, the time on the website said 21:04 but it took me 2 seconds to cross the start line so I feel I have the right to claim those 2 seconds back for PB purposes.

This was my first race ever, came in in just under 27mins. Enjoyed it thoroughly!
Thanks to boards.ie for alerting me to this race and I hope many more!

Blew up bad first race of the season got a little too excited being nearly 20 sec inside my target time for the mile with 4.41 way too fast and ended up trailing home in 17.13 still better to get that out of the way before novices next week

I know its not what you were looking for and I dont want to patronise you, but 17:13 is a decent performance. Those 5k races are tricky buggers to call, you can lose time so easily, theres no margin for error at all. Some of the lads from the club ran a few really good times. I did 16:35 myself which was a bit slower than I thought Id do but Im happy enough because I was catching people all the time and had that been a 10k race Im sure I wouldve been able to hold my pace for the whole distance and finished fairly high up. So even though Ive lost a yard or two over the short races Ive gained endurance and the ability to hold a tempo which bodes well for the marathon. All in all a good days work

I wanted to thank Rathfarnham AC for their help in clothing pacers at the Race Series half yesterday, but couldn't find a thread for their upcoming race...

Guerilla advertising at its best- the highly regarded Rathfarnham 5k is on next Sunday 23rd Sept. Details and entry from the link above.

    Last year's thread
    Garmin track of course

Hmm yeh amazing it doesn't have a thread yet! One of the highlights of the year, definitely one of the (if not the) fastest 5k courses in Ireland. At 20quid it might be at the top end of the budget for most club races but well worth it for how well organized it is! Up front its always a top top class race, but good spread down the field, You will have someone to race with always!

Is there good parking around the area, BTW?

  • Registered Users Posts: 93 ✭✭SomeUnusedName

BTW anywhere good to park around there?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

There's plenty of parking in Terenure College itself, where the race HQ is.

Was going to start a thread on this myself :) - it's my next race (assuming I can walk properly by then:o), my son will be doing his first 5k (OH escorting him around), and there should be a huge turnout from the club. It'll be the first proper race for a lot of the people who just started this summer, because as Timmaay said above, this is a great race at every level of the field. Lots of people there at every standard, always a good atmosphere, and a nice looped route.

(forgot to add, those luminous t-shirts should come in handy for the winter)

Signed up for this myself and hoping to run a pb of sub 19. Will also be bringing a friend along for her first 5k. She's recently lost 4 stone and started running a few months ago. Really looking forward to it.

    Count me in too :)

Have signed up but can only stay 20 minutes ;)

Ran this in training a few weeks back and despite the hill up to Terenure Village and the drag along Templeogue Rd, it's a pretty quick course, especially if there's a moderate westerly breeze blowing. My first "real" 5k race, I'm looking forward to utterly murdering myself for just less than 22 minutes.

I'm running too, well trying to finish the thing at all really :D Hoping to improve on my 5 k time by a little...... and not be the last one running! It's my first proper race so I dont really know what to expect :pac:

According to the website, 800 did it last year and they expect more this year.

    Only 800 t-shirts available though.

Whatever about the fact that you were OAP'd in the Summer, you don't want to be OAPB'd :D;)

Gutted to be missing this one. This is the first year I have been in shape to take a stab at the PB on this course since it was a summer race and was supposed to do it but new job means cant get out of work on Sunday so will be the first time I missed it in a very long time.

For anyone who hasn't done it before probably one my favorite races of the year first mile is lightning fast so keep it in mind and dont go out too hard.

best of luck to all running I am sure there will be a few PBs come Sunday afternoon

I've not got a lot of experience racing, so when you say the 1st mile is lightning fast, do you mean dont try and maintain the pace of the first mile through to the finish as it will be faster than the the last 2 & a bit and you'll end up dying on the road?

It's slightly downhill and you usually have the wind at your back so you'll feel strong and fast which makes it easy to hammer on. It's once you reach the eastern edge of Bushy and the road starts rising again that you'll realise you now have to work even harder, so conserving a little energy in the first mile will help get you up and into Terenure Village. It's a fast course, but it's not an even course, so adjusting your pace for the conditions is important if you want to be able to keep going.

Ran it again last night (it's the perfect distance for a particular fartlek run that I do) and the hardest section without a doubt is Templeogue road. The hill up to the Village is only initially steep and levels out quite quickly, so you don't need to worry too much about it.
Templeogue road is deceptive and continually rises even though it looks flat. When you get to the black railings at Rathdown, my advice would be to ease up very slightly on the pace. When you get to the gates of Our Lady's the road starts to dip again - maintain the same slightly easier pace until you get to the left turn and you will have recovered your energy somewhat so you'll be able to put the hammer down for the last mile into the finish.

    That's the plan anyway :D

Yeah I was driving down it today & thought it was fairly flat but then remembered it was quite quick heading down it in the Terenure 5 Mile. Its a long straight too, so if you are suffering it will probably seem a lot longer.

How easy will it be to get out of Terenure college afterwards seeing as the race comes up Templeogue road?
