Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Anyone got any recommendations for a good homebrewing book for a beginner? Got my first kit and equipment coming today but would like to start reading up as much as I can about the whole process and ingredients involved. Cheers.

John Palmer's How To Brew is very well regarded. The 1st ed. is free online here. Also, Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels and The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. Clone Brews by Tess & Mark Szamatulski is also a neat little reference source.

Plus, of course, there's ICB's Knowledge Base, and the new A-Z in particular.

I I own many brewing books, but I would advise a beginner against buying a book at all. Any book is going to go into much more detail than you need at the start and seeing all that seemingly complicated stuff can be quite off-putting.

Have a look at Brewing: How do I Start? to find what level you would like to begin with and then follow the links to the relevant articles, which give you instructions. Once you have done a few batches and want to learn more, by all means start looking at brewing books, but right now, the articles on ICB are all you need.

That John Palmer "How to Brew" is perfect. Exactly what I was looking for. Even if I dont need all the information at the moment its good to know exactly whats goin on on in the process and to whet the appetite for future brews. A very interesting read. Particularly the section on the various hops varieties.
