Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can't ping particular machines through VPN
-
30-09-2009 4:19pmHello.
Hopefully someone might be able to spot something for me here... I am somewhat flummoxed.
We have a large amount of Dell Precision 690's that are all on the same ghosted build. We VPN into our network using Cisco VPN Client V4.8. We can't ping any of the 690's that have this particular build. We can ping alright from the network, but not when connected in through VPN. We can ping other machines on the network that have an older build. I have cross-checked the installed software between the new build and the old build.. and other than Windows updates, I see anything that might be causing the problem... the machines are in various places around the office and so would be using different switches. Does anyone have any suggestions..? Here is the installed software anyway:
Thanks

Could be a local firewall issue (i.e. the systems won't allow external IPs to ping them). Check your border firewall or VPN endpoint logs to make sure the pings are getting across the VPN OK, and try running a packet sniffer on one of the hosts and see if you see the pings hitting the hosts themselves.
Maybe try disabling any local system firewalls (e.g. Windows firewall, and bear in mind that a lot of modern AV apps contain firewalls) temporarily to see if this helps.0 -
Thanks for the reply fruitlover, there are no firewalls enabled on the machines themselves. I can also happily ping other machines on the network through VPN.
Using Wireshark I can see the VPN ping hitting one of the affected machines, but no reply getting sent out. When I ping from another machine on network, (not through VPN), the ping reply gets sent out ok. I have compared the packet data of the ping from VPN (Cisco router) and the ping from network, and I can't see any difference between them.0 -
Have the affected machines got a default gateway set? Can you ping out from the local hosts to the remote VPN hosts?
Worst case, you could source-NAT inbound traffic over the VPN to a local IP, but this would be a workaround rather than a solution.0 -
Hi, thanks for the replies... we actually tracked down the problem to VMWare Player. The VMWare Network Adapters that were in the image didn't seem to like this particular machine hardware build. I remotely uninstalled VMWare player (we don't actually need it due to ESX implementation), and now all is good!
I have VMWare Player installed via a ghosted build on my machine (T7400), and no problems.. so took a while to pinpoint!
Thanks
