Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Paying for a Car in the UK

My friend is looking to buy a car from the UK from a main dealer and the only way the dealer is willing to accept payment is by bank transfer which has to clear before the car is released.

    He is refusing

    1. Cash - Money laundering rules or something in the UK limit transaction value to £7,500

    2. Credit Card - Hit with 2% fee which will have to be borne by my friend

    3. Laser Card/Debit Card - Max on card is €2,500 in one day

    4. Bank Draft/Cheques - Obviously a no-no due to forgery's

    Any suggestions

Best option we can see is
    £7,500 cash
£10,000 on credit card incurring £200 in charges

    Any better options?

    Why is he refusing?

I have done it sucessfully twice with main dealers in the UK.If he's happy with the car I can't see why there's a problem.

You'd have to be pretty trusting to transfer £17,500 to a garage you've never been to, to a person you've never seen for a car you haven't inspected and hope everything worked out OK.

He wants to make one trip over pay for the car and come home with the car. He has only found in on Autotrader. He hasn't physically inspected the car.

I don't think its reasonable for the garage to expect him to transfer the cash into their bank account prior to coming to see the car.

    3. Laser Card/Debit Card - Max on card is €2,500 in one day

You sure about this, i bought a car 3 years ago in the UK with my laser card £10000 with no trouble, as long as the funds are in the account and the card has the cirrus/maestro logo on the back you should be able to pay this way.

He's with Ulster bank and they told him a max of €1,500 per transaction on his card and that there was a limit of €2,500 per day. Perhaps he got incorrect information

Currency.ie deal with people buying in the uk all the time. I've used them and got a great exchange rate. You transfer the money to a holding account with currency.ie then if you are happy with the car contact them and tell them the details of the account you want it lodged to. Im not sure but I think if you do this mid week the money is transfered within an hour or two. Dealer can contact his bank to see money has gone in.
