Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Vermiculite Insulation Fill in New Chimney Stack

    Hi,

We are currently building 2 internal chimneys (against gable walls) on an ICF house with standard blockwork and 8" flue. We are starting the chimneys off a concrete prestressed slab on the 1st floor. After we have chosen our stove and gas fire unit we will connect up the chimneys.

Can someone tell me the correct way to fill the void between the blockwork stack and the outside of the 8" clay flue. Is the Vermiculite insulation (Micafil brandname) simply poured in loose or must it be mixed with cement or sand?

What happens if it gets wet?

    Thanks,
    Windboy

I have done this, but it was to insulate between a flexible S/Steel liner and an existing 8" clay flue on a new house.

It was for a wood burning stove. I just poured it in loose between the liner and flue.

All sorts of fun when the wind is up a bit :).

If you are putting a wood burning stove in, I would strongly recommend you look into an insulated liner rather than use a clay flue.
