Where'd you get it? Can you bring it back?

How do you mean sick - is he throwing up or?
Ok what age/breed is the pup?
What has he eaten since you got him? did he have far to travel? Any other info?

edit - nipplenuts, it's not a gone off cake, it's a sick pup - perhaps finding out what's wrong is more important initially than 'can I bring it back'

Did you get the pup from a reputable breeder?

What exactly is wrong with the pup? do you think you need yo bring it to the vet? Is it vomitting or diarrhoea, or both? if so this can be very serious and needs to go to the vet asap as young pups can get dehydrated very quickly if they have vomitting and the runs.

    How old is the pup?

Can you elaborate on what you mean by sick? young puppies get sick very easily but a lot of the time it may not be something too bad. If you just brought him home and had to travel he could be car sick. If he has diarrhoea it could be due to a change in his diet/if he is very young it could be from being weaned onto food. Changes in there diet at first upset their stomach and causes diarrhoea. Other than that he could have a slight infection. Should be taken to the vet anyway to eliminate all of the serious possibilities.

You should be feeding him the same food he's been on for a few days, then you slowly introduce the new food, less old food - more new food, until it becomes all new food. Never just swap foods, it will make them sick.

It probably will take him a while to settle in with you guys.

if he's getting different food now that he's with you, this will almost definitely irritate his stomach, especially when combined with being taken away from hi mother and siblings.

if you don't know what brand the breeder was giving him, ring tomorrow and ask, buy a bag and keep him on that for a while until he's settled in. If you then decide to change food once he's settled, do it slowly by mixing two-thirds of the old food with one-third new, then after a week or so when he's used to that, make it two-thirds new until you finally move onto all new stuff.

Make sure he has loads of fresh water, very important if he's vomiting or has diarrhea.

Its also quite common for pups to wolf down their food the get sick a while later(usually eat it again too:eek:)
Both of mine did it a few times, usually if left too long between feeds. Wasn't regular though.
A friends pup used to clean his bowl in seconds at every meal, only to bring it all back up hour or so later. This stopped as he got used to feeding times and slowed down eating. He was a smaller pup from a large litter and vet told her this can be the case when they have to fight for their share.

Just to add, if pup is lively, healthy looking, eating well, and vomiting isn't regular or continuous, its probably ok. Just keep an eye on it, and if you're worried give the vet a call tomorrow.

Ashisback, what brand of food was the breeder giving him and what kind are you giving him now?

Yup most foods are handy enough to get - I'm surprised the owner didn't offer you some of the food or ask if you had any yourself.
I would say that's the main reason for him being sick, along with new home etc, changing food straight over like that does them no favours.

it was a nut food were giving him bakers

Bakers maybe? if thats it thats available in the supermarket, but its not a great quality food.

Why not ring the breeder and ask what exactly the food is the pup was on and go from there.

Was the pup just sick once? how is he other wise? has he had all his vaccinations and that? did you get all this info from the breeder when you picked up the pup?

Do you mean bakers? This stuff: http://www.bakerscomplete.co.uk/ If it is then its available in nearly all supermarkets and petshops, it pretty crap food but its best to keep him on it until you gradually change him over to new better quality stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,000 ✭✭✭andreac

Ah right, well just keep an eye on him, could be just the food thats upset him.

Make sure hes not taken out for walks until hes had all his vaccinations as there are diseases that are very dangerous to young pups, like parvo and lepto, they can get very ill, even be fatal, so be very careful and dont bring him out until hes over all his jabs.

Yeah, Bakers really isn't great. Especially for a high-energy breed like your Spaniel. It's really the doggy equivalent of living on sausage rolls from Spar :)

As a general rule, any pet food you buy in a supermarket (Pedigree, Bakers etc.) is at the lower end of the scale. Hve a search on here, there are loads of recommendations of great foods that will be suitable for your dog. Firstly, though, ring the breeder tomorrow and put him straight back on what he was getting and is used to.

:) What I meant was, could you bring it back to the reputable seller who may be able to shed some light. Or even alert them lest the rest of their dogs fall ill.
