Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi Guys,

I've thinking of upgrading to Digital SLR and I've read all the stickies and settled on the above camera.
I started calling around all the camera shops in Dublin and some outside and I find the price is 799 euro, each and every camera shop told me that they couldn't change that price, and there was no way that they would give me any sort of discount. The best I was offered was a free extra battery

I looked in Jessops, newry and find that the same camera is 579 pounds thats about 630 euro. Even after I told the camera shops that price they still wouldn't talk about prices. The only difference is Cannon Ireland give a half days training on the camera and Jessops don't.

Is there a little dare I say it, price fixing going on?

it's canon who basicaly set the prices when they sell to the camera shops, for most shops if they reduce the price they sell cameras at, they won't make enough profit to keep their doors open.

i used to work in a shop that sold canon cameras and the rice that we bought them at, was (at the time) higher than one could pay for the same stuff form either the uk or the usa.

Canon Ireland are the people who have the power to change retail prices in Ireland

But it's the same with all electronics in Ireland. I just bought an Apple laptop in Belfast for considerably less than it would cost in Dublin

It's not unusual for Irish shops to not negotiate on price but that wouldn't be unique to camera shops (ok, I know, some will). I'd suspect in the case of camera shops they guess that internet shoppers will shop the internet for the last two'pence off and they aren't worth the effort (this point of course being debatable) as they will always come back and say "but I can get this wonderful deal from jessops, keaphoto, t-dimension, etc.., etc..". They must have a market that is served by their model otherwise they wouldn't be still in business. In their mind, internet shoppers can go to the internet basically i'd think.

There appears to be an Irish pricing model which is a long way off other countries models. I think in fairness they work in a very different environment to that which may be experienced in other countries. If you take Gunns for example, they appear to be genuine by all accounts and are reputed to offer service which is second to none as part of the deal which is way beyond what you would expect of an internet box shifter. You end up paying a little more in the process but many will testify to its worth. Others don't appear to be as good with their service and still charge high prices (often more than the Gunns example). How and ever Irish retail can make their own excuses (i'm not representing any shop :D)

There was a bargain alert the other day in the bargains forum for a 450D in hardley normals for €499. I didn't pay too much attention to it but take a look . It might be something that could interest you. Others could tell you whether there is much difference between the 450 and 500d.

Bodhan, I'm in exactly the same boat as you, on the verge of buying a 500d, do you reckon we'd get anywhere by teaming up ?

secondly, jessops.com are now offering a STG€65 cashback on the 500d if you are a student registered on a photography related course in Ireland/UK. Might be worth a post over in the college boards and partnering up with a digital media student and splitting the refund some way..

That's true, the refund applies to ROI as well. Funny that the camera shops here aren't offering it.
It's typical Ireland that this price fixing is allowed to go on, I hate having to go to the North it buy it but the money is better in my pocket than theirs.
I'm going to Jessops in Newry to buy it, I have other stuff to get as well. Don't buy your camera in Ireland because they all rip you off!!!

Well, apparently they (Irish retailers) do give cash back offers (which is likely to be a manufacturer thing anyway). I was privy to a discussion last night and certainly the camera centre in Blanchardstown have a cash back offer of €70 available so I suspect the other retailers will have something similar.

Also depends on your consideration of "rip you off". While you may not - many people will value the service they get from a local shop. Perhaps they haven't a clue about what to buy or want to discuss some aspect of their next lens purchase or they are just more comfortable dealing with someone that they are able to just pop in to.

Many others will put a trip to Newry as being nothing more than a pain in the ass and if you were to be regularly doing it I suspect you'd soon get fed up of it. Grand, if you've nothing better to be doing with your time - point accepted.

In fairness though "don't buy from xyz-up-north-shop they all will rip you off" could be said when compared with online buying. To be honest, its horses for courses. Lots of people I have come across have bought up north and are very pleased. Lots of people I've come across have bought online and would swear by it. And lots of people I know wouldn't pass the door of their local camera retailer for the service they get.

Again, I'm not representing the Irish retailer in any of this but I think it's too narrow to tar them all with the one brush.

Hello Bodhan, I bought mine from Park Cameras for £510

    See http://www.parkcameras.com/11343/Canon-EOS-500D-Body-Only.html

This is not just in Ireland, but something I noticed right across Europe when I was buying the same camera... huge variations in the prices (lenses too). To say "it pays to shop around" is a massive understatement, can easily pour €150 down the tubes on a single item. In USA they're far cheaper again.

That's a good price you're getting on Jessops, I can see why you are frustrated. The price of the camera has dropped this past month. Komplett.ie are now selling it with the 18-55 at € 575.31 ex VAT. I don't know how valuable Canon's training is, didn't know they offered that. Probably not worth €160 to you though... I would just buy it off Jessops and put some of what you saved into buying a good How To book instead.

do you remember what they charged you for delivery? The website says £16.84 for anything <£500 and £74.67 for anything >£500. Did they let you away with the lower rate seeing as it was £510?

warehouseexpress.com are doing it for the same price too but delivery is thirty odd sterling

Oh dear, I have already ordered a 50D - Hong Kong prices but from UK - so no customs charges.

Too late for me but, I will keep the forum posted on how it goes, was looking good, in stock and pending dispatch.

Never know, may buck the trend, they have to get it right occasionally, I have even used Pixmania a few times without issue.

    Guess, its fingers crossed!!

Just gonna ask that question myself, the bundles seem cheap there too. It is the kit that I want too, the 18-55 lens will do me for awhile.

You will see my post from earlier in the week, ordered before I saw the comments on AV Forums!

Well after a slightly worried few days my EOS 50D (with kit lens) at £945 has all arrived - took 4 working days in total.

Good order tracking on website (and then through DHL) - although they seem to work HK hours so updates to order status happen overnight. Also have to use 'Google check out' when purchase and took about 8 hours for order to appear on their website.

Based on my experience I would recomend this company.

€720 in argos. I'm(meaning my parents are) buying mine today!!!

Edit: Bought it. Now the mother put it away 'til christmas morning. Can't wait. We took it out of box to make sure there were no scratches and stuff on it. It looked so class. Also in Harvey Norman, with their haggle a bargain deal, I got a case for it for €25 down from €40. Its Vanguard and is plenty large for the camera, an attached lens and a spare lens. Tried to haggle down a second 75-300mm IS lens but couldn't get it below €260 from €280.

Well guys after much searching around and the way the exchange rate went, I am now the proud owner of a 500d. Bought in Argos as Jackobyte said €721.
Tried to buy it in Komplett @ 699 but it was out of stock.

I have to say fantastic camera, I'm still messing with all the features. But out of the box I was getting great shots! There's tonnes of features and loads of pro software for post production, there's even a link from the software to photoshop.

No complants here, just need a good camera bag now.

Forgot to say, you get a €10 voucher in argos for spending over €100 too. So the camera worked out to be €711 really.

Hey guys, anyone know where I'd get the HDMI cable for the 500d? I thought it was just a normal one but the hole in the camera is much smaller

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,321 ✭✭✭Jackobyte

I'd have no need for a bag that big. This is my first DSLR so I only have the lens from box. After Christmas I plan to buy a 70-300 lens if possible.

€720? Wow. You can get them in the USA for about €400, probably cheaper to fly over the New York and buy it there.

[Reason I'm bumping this thread is because I have planned something similar to what I've outlined above. Father is going to Cali in January]

    Hi all,

Long time lurker to this forum, but recently took the step into the SLR world.

Was in NYC last week and picked up the Canon EOS Rebel T1i kit, which is the US equivalent of the 500D. I got mine from B&H in Manhattan.

    The kit was: link

Got all this for about $1000, which came out on my credit card as €700. I added in the international warranty, as Canon products sold in North America have only a valid warranty in the US and Canada.

I recommend this place if you are over there anyway, as the store is massive and has a great selection.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

How much was the international warranty?

I'll be in B&H soon, have bought from there before but am buying more expensive things this time and want to make sure I'll be ok if things go pear shaped when I get it home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,349 ✭✭✭basill

Another vote for B&H. J&R is good as well and seems to pretty much fix its prices against B&H. The latter is of course the specialist shop so has much more choice and has to be seen to be believed in terms of size.

If you don't have any plans to venture that far afield then Jessops can't really be beaten on price. A "trick" to get a discount is to google for any current discount offers that they have. Try using search terms like "jessops discount codes". They are normally Jessops10 or Jessops20 or something along those lines. When ordering online there is a box for inserting any coupons or discount codes and you will be charged the net amount.

I got 10% off my 450D a couple of years ago when ordering online. I was going to be in the UK the next day so just nominated the nearest store and took the printed internet order along with me and there were no questions asked concerning the discount. Then there was the Canon cashback discount to avail of as well. Bargain.

To be honest, I cant remember idea how much the international warranty was, but I think it was under $50. I'll have a look later tonight.

The warranty that came in the box clearly says "valid in US and Canada only", so if you dont get it, you would be fecked.

Now what I did get was a separate warranty document with serial numbers / purchase dates etc, so that if something goes wrong I call an international helpline and they will give me the name of the local Canon service centre (presumably a dealer over here). I would then have to bring in the document and the camera and all would be looked after.

Great thanks. Might mail myself back those documents, being caught in customs with that kind of evidence would be...undesirable.
