I am currently in leaving cert and have a huge interest in Civil Engineering. I have looked at the courses available in NUIG, UCD, UL and TCD but have no way of comparing them. Does anybody out there know which is the best course to do? Which is the most highly regarded/ recognised?? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Well I am far from an expert in such matters but from what I heard TCD would likely be best regarded as it is Trinners.... UCD however is supposed to actually do a better course or at least the UCD course caters for a wider range of options.

DIT is meant to be the best for Engineering in general*, but it is DIT......

*This is in terms of how prepared you would be to get a job after your degree, from what I've been told DIT graduates are very very employable.

Trinity isnt actually meant to be that great afaik, it depends what you want to do. I have no idea about Civil Engineering.

Ask on the individual boards what the Civil Eng dept in each college is like, the people who use the boards arent trying to sell you the course so chances are, you wont get massive bias. Dont ask them to compare the courses, they just wont know.

I did undenominated for first year in NUIG and then did civil engineering..gives you a wide range of what you can go into..in terms of whats best regarded i dont think anyone really cares as long as you've the degree..structural from DIT is well regarded but has strict marking lecturers making life hard for you there (a huge percentage having to repeat exams year in year out).

In the company im in now there are people form all the major uni's in ireland, DIT and few other IT's also

Civil Engineering in UL is slightly different. You learn through problem based learning, where you are essentially put into groups, given a problem and using your knowledge, find a solution. Im in Aero engineering so I only share one or two modules with the civils but from what I hear it is good. Plus you also have a 9 month work placement where you get paid, and great to have on your CV when you finish college.

Be warned though, engineering courses are not easy and require a lot of work from you.

Oh, and pay attention in English class, because it is an important skill to have. We have a module pretty much dedicated to report writing and learning how to write like an engineer, it is boring, very boring and none of us want to do it, but it has to be done!

I’ve applied to carlow and attended the Bridge math for 4th year. I found it very helpful and lecturer is a good math teacher. I’m also going to do the maths exam in athlone because I heard that it’s a good place as well. Both places are rough the same distance away and both are two years!

Napier is a university after all and that still an option. I’m finding it hard to make a decision? Any idea??

Hi my sister went into undenominated engineering in galway, she reallly wanted to do civil but hated it in the end she is now doing biomedical and loves it. It was the best thing ever that she didnt get the points for civil.

In the undemoniated you do the subjects common to all engineering in first year and bits of the different types through the year. Then you specialise in the one you like in 2nd year.

Probably that its not a university.
Even if the course and teaching is better, employers are usually going to assume that University > IT, whether correct or not..
