Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hi, bit of a weird one here. A friend of mine has a child in a fee paying primary school in Dublin. They get a half day every week and have school from 9-3. Also the school finishes for Summer holidays at the end of May, rather than June. I found this very unusual. Is there not any kind of Dept of Education rule regarding minimum hours of education?

DES has no say over private schools.

DES has no say over private schools.
As they say ,'A bit of a law onto themselves...'

One would imagine, however, that private schools SHOULD be subject to some form of inspection, in the same way that those who home school children are.
Either way, if it's a choice parents make, whatever their reasons, then that is pretty much that.

This school also has a longer school day than most primary schools - 20 minutes a day. So maybe that is where they get their half day. You would think that there would be some guidelines.

I can't believe the DES has no say over private schools. I assume they have to follow the Primary Curriculum?

A private fee paying primary in Limerick is similiar on hours and length of school year too - finishes up in late May every year. Far as I know, the curriculum is broadly covered but there is no real obligation on them to cover full aspects compared to state schools. Of course, it wouldn't be in the school's best interests not to follow the curriculum as the kids have to move on to secondary school and will need to be up to speed with kids in other schools in the area. If school wasn't preparing pupils to move on to secondary with confidence in their educational abilities, the school's future intake of pupils would surely suffer.
