Is there such thing as a usb to ide cable

I have a couple of ide laptop HDD's that I would like to use as portable media. Instead of buying some usb casing to put them in is it possible to to get a cable that goes from usb to ide or does there need to be software involved? Thanks

Maplin do a USB to IDE adapter kit. It comes with a power adapter, so its a little bulky.
I use the caddys myself. Got them cheap on ebay and they work great. . .
