First Build.

Hey Guys looking for a bit of help. Have decided to build my first pc and am struggling to select the right parts. I am finding it hard to decide where to save money and where to spend money.

Budget: €1200 - €1300, preferably nearer €1200
Will be using my 37" HD TV as a monitor
90% of the time, will be using it as a general media machine, music, videos & general surfing
But will also be using photoshop, cad and playing the new Call of Duty.
Will be getting windows 7, but not sure if I should get the 32bit or 64bit
Hard drive at least 750Gb
Should I invest in a SSD?
CPU: I know the i7 is a bit overkill. but overkill is good.
Motherboard: ?
Graphics: ?
Case: must look good, size not a factor
Would love a blu-ray player if it could be squeezed into the budget.
Overclocking, would be nice to have the ability (never tried before)

Any suggestions welcome.
As this is my first build, nothing too complicated, thanks.

Couple of questions first.

What is a good looking case to you ? Sleek and understated or ''look at me !''

Are you storing things on this PC that you dont want to lose ?

And to answer your questions ?

Get 64 bit Windows,so your system can see all its available memory.Not just the ±3.25 GB that 32 limits you to.

SSD's are awesome

5850 should suit you well (I say that to everyone lol),it can take on preety much any game at teh moment.

Motherboard.Nearly every board has the X58 chipset for i7 so there aint a huge amount of difference in the lower end i7 boards

Definitely a "look at me!" case.
And about storage. I back anything important on an external hd.

Deano12345 also reccomended that graphics card, must be good if everyone is recommending it.
How much difference would the cheaper ram make? Might stick with the origional ram, if it differs much, especially if i order from komplett.

I cant comment on the XMS3 but I do know those Blades I suggested to you are very very quick.

it's more a case of what it'll allow for overclocking as opposed to any noticeable benefit.

SFC's budget models may not win any awards (they don't even have Active PFC) but they are a long, long way away from the utter dross you can pay more money for; hell, if the budget models had APFC I'd recommend them against those PoS FSP units OCZ spams all over the place any day! :P

be warned the win 7 you are looking at is in german language lol also i would look at this mobo http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=439503 gigabit are known to be trouble
also the other cpu cooler is not 1366 compatable this is and its a beast http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=441389

Quite the opposite about Gigabyte.They are one of the most reliable motherboards thanks to their 3'' copper PCB

Didnt catch the cooler though,and personally would go with the TRUE 120

Usually the order goes like this for CPU coolers.

1.Thermalright IFX-14
2.Prolimatech Megahalems
3.Thermalright Ultra-120 (with lapping and ''pressure mod'' can beat megahalems)

Those are the top 3.While the Thors Hammer ain't bad the TRUE will serve you better (even with out the mod's)

something the OP should beware of, all those coolers perform best at very high RPMs, which means a lot of noise.

if noise is important, you might consider the Noctua. Designed to function with lower RPM fans in mind. It wont allow for as high overclocks, but it's still not far off the top few.

yeah, that's the one. I have one of them meself, they wouldn't be on the same level as the Megahalem or that for cooling, but they are damn quiet. I've typically mine at 900RPM and you'd hardly notice it, and it still keeps my temps fairly low.

The best part of them is that they supply absolutely everything you need to install (including thermal paste), whether the likes of the Megahalem or TRUE sometimes will leave you having to buy extra fans or clips.

And their flesh coloured fans look great in the industrial styled HAF!

With some moderate (nothing extreme) overclocking what kind of speeds could I get from the i7 920 and the suggested build? Could I get near 3.5GHz?

I'd imagine you would fairly handy. I've a pretty similar setup though and I haven't bothered OCing mine as i've simply had no need to.
