    McNamara resigns officially

Mike McNamara's reign as Clare manager has come to an end, as expected, after he tendered his resignation to the Clare County Board tonight.

A special meeting of the County Board was called for 8.30pm this evening at the West County Hotel in Ennis, where McNamara ended weeks of speculation by offering his resignation.

His offer was accepted, and Ger O'Loughlin is now expected to take the reins, possibly as early as Thursday.

O'Loughlin was proposed and seconded at tonight's meeting, but his position was not ratified. However, he is expected to be ratified officially at the County Convention on Thursday.

O'Loughlin is officially ratified as new manager

Ger O'Loughlin's appointment as the new Clare senior hurling manager was ratified at the County Convention on Thursday night.

The former Banner attacker, who led Limerick club Adare to three county titles in a row, takes over from Mike McNamara, who tendered his resignation at Tuesday's county board meeting after a protracted, two-month dispute with his players.

O'Loughlin has been appointed on what is expected to be a two-year term, according to county secretary Pat Fitzgerald.

'What has disappointed me in all of this is the manner in which it has been dealt with,' Fitzgerald said in his address to the convention, in reference to the McNamara saga.

'The whole business should not have been transacted through the media - a much less confrontational and acrimonious approach should have been adopted.

'I am a firm believer in keeping the lid on internal sensitive issues. I feel that they should be dealt with in-house, in a private and confidential fashion and that such matters should be prevented, at all costs, from reaching the public domain.

'One can only suggest that it is time for everybody concerned from top to bottom to reflect on what has contributed to this current impasse and to set about putting a structure in place which will ensure that Clare GAA never again encounters such a dilemma.'

NEW Clare manager Ger 'Sparrow' O'Loughlin has invited Gerry Quinn and Tony Griffin to throw their shoulders to the Banner's wheel for the coming season.

The pair are among a number of players O'Loughlin has contacted to join the county panel ahead of a return to collective training early in the New Year.

Quinn -- who was axed by O'Loughlin's predecessor Mike McNamara for an alleged breach of team discipline last season -- is expected to accept the invitation and his return would hugely bolster the county's defence.

Griffin, still only 28, announced his retirement from inter-county hurling last month and it remains to be seen if he reverses that surprise decision. It is understood that a number of fringe players have been let go and O'Loughlin is expected to add fresh impetus by calling up a number of the county's All-Ireland U-21 winners.

O'Loughlin, who has managed Adare to the last three Limerick SHC titles, completed his management team over the Christmas period with the addition of Liam Doyle, a former team-mate on Clare's 1995 and 1997 All-Ireland SHC-winning teams.

In recent seasons, Doyle has been involved with his own club Bodyke, Sixmilebridge and Smith O'Brien's in Clare
