    What good do they do?

If the Western world sees that a country they need resources from does not want to play by their rules, they impose economic and trade sanctions on this country.

These measures lead no where, and even if they do force governments into submission, they do so at an enormous cost to humanity. Its not worth it.

Western capitalistism, which is built solely on ignored corruption, has no right to deny a developing country its gains through water torture like this, just because these governments may be equally corrupt, does not mean this should happen.

It has to stop, but not enough people are aware on what sanctions really are... they are death sentances handed down by the West to countries who in their small minded view have broken an international law.

The purpose they supposedly serve is to destroy the nation in question's economy and peacefully force the government out. Now,I oppose them on much the same humanitarian grounds as you do, and agree they've been somewhat ineffectual when applied(particularly on Saadam Hussein's Iraq). However, economic sanctions cannot simply be imposed as you say here, but rather are a process agreed upon by international bodies such as the UN and EU.

Unilateral sanctions are imposed by the US, on countries that do not obey its might. Take Cuba and other Latin Americian countires... these countries were not given UN approved sanctions.

In regards to the EU, just look at what their agreed sanctions are doing to the people of Zimbabwe... you can say what you like about Robert Mugabe doing it to his own contry by tossing the white farmers... but where is the logic in further plummeting the country into economic meltdown by punishing the PEOPLE with sanctions for the internal decisions a openly corrupt leader made... it modern geonocide on the EUs part and yet we make Mr Mugube to be solely responsible for his countries problems when they are compounded by Western bully boy tactics.
