So Portugal because of one player, and Russia because it might be cold??

Russia play on a plastic pitch which wouldn't be easy IMO

Bertie didn't play upfront against the Tribunal so I don't expect he'd be any good in that position. Cowen would be more of right of centre than any left sided position.

    COME ON IRELAND !!!!!!

France is terrible on free and corner kicks and thats a fact!
Ireland should definitly concetrate on that, pray that Domenech wont put Mandanda on a goal coz Lloris is completely lost case in this team,he is having lack of communication with defense and he is usually flying into empty space off the ball all the time, sometimes it looks ridiculous...

Their first XI is pretty strong but their overall squad is nowhere near the likes of Spain, Brazil, England etc. Still expect to get hammered mind.

Well I'd make him an offer he couldn't refuse with an option to return to Les Girondins after the WC (ie pay Bordeaux to keep the job open)

Reading some of the comments im just glad some of the posters here dont play for the Ireland squad. Fair enough its going to be tough.

But comments such as "its gunna be over before kick off" and "still think well get hammered" are disgraceful to be honest.

If "horrible" is the word to describe this draw, what would be used for Portugal or Russia?

2nd best draw we could get, out of 4.

France wouldn't scare me, Portugal might have... Russia definitely. France are beatable, going to be very tough, but not impossible.

or stay unattached for sometime until you move to Scotland

    or

dont play the banjo at 3am

    or

dont be a decent FB or Midfielder and good at long throws

    or

dont look like an egghead and play regular for Birmingham

    or

dont ever play more than a wet week in the LOI unless your Kevin Doyle

heck dont acknowledge the LOI at all

With France anything is possible although I do see us going through by putting in a huge effort over the two legs.

When it comes down to it both teams will be doing there upmost to qualify, France through attacking and great technical players on us through resolute defending and great spirit. If Trap has thought us anything the most important part of his approach is the result, if we can manage to pip them at Croke park I believe we can go to France and hold on.

Failing that I can see us drawing at Croke and getting a score draw in France to go through.

Come on lads, ye can do it.

Just checked the sports section of French news site LeMonde and there's a poll with the following question...

Do Les Bleus have the weapons to beat Eire in the play-off for the 2010 World Cup?

Yes, they are the favourites and have the individual and collective quality to go through - 45.9 %

No, the Irish have more desire and the tactical knowledge of Trapattoni will be the difference - 54.1 %

That's after 1319 votes so far.

France have scored in ALL of their qualifying games. Which suggests we will almost certainly have to score at least 2 goals over the two legs. Not beyond the realms of possibilty considering we scored 3 against the Italians over two games. Personally I think Italy have a better defence than the French.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 517 ✭✭✭lisbon_lions

I dont think the French are overly happy with the draw either, going from LeMonde and LEquipe.

Ah, blind faith, only in Ireland!
I don't get an attitude like this. What's the point in supporting a team if you don't believe they have a chance of winning. Fair enough if we were a team like San Marino that wouldn't have a chance in hell of beating France, but at the very least we have a chance to beat a French team that haven't been playing well lately.

I was there in 2005 when Henry scored and effectively knocked us out of the World Cup and I would Kevin Keegan love it and we put one over them this time!

France havnts scored that many goals,, Gignac is still learning his trade on international scene and i reckon big richie dunne can handle his agression like he done well with drogba theo ther day..

Henry has struggled with niggly injuries and might not be ready to make the big impact needed

anelka well... le sulk says it all he drifts in and out of games

diarra and toulan = our version (albeit better) whelan/andrews not great at going forward...

we can well do it lads comon!!

Cant see us getting through this one

One thing I've noticed is any team with a bit of guile or craft against us will take us nice and easy I feel.

Without all the french guys firing on all cylinders, they have enough craft and creativity on the flanks to ahnihalate us.

Evra, Ribery... I dont even want to continue.

And I cant see us scoring at home or away.

2-0 win for france in croker

Then depending how they feel id say another 2-0 in france.

If we go one down early to a top team like France what's Plan B? I doubt we'll be as lucky as the Italy match where they got a man sent off early and the French are not cautious by nature like the Italians. We just don't creativity to break down teams like that, unless we get set pieces perfectly spot on.

well i did say it will be over before kick off, in paris. I'm only going on history, when was the last time we beat a decent side? We can't seem to beat any side by more than a goal, we can't defend a lead, we have no midfield. how many irish players would make the french side? You can call it negativity, all i'm saying is there's very little evidence to simply believe it will happen.
