Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    0-0 Dublin

1-1 Paris ( With Ireland grabbing a last minute goal)

Our best hope is beating them and going to Paris with a lead.

I'd be concerned they'd kill us on the counter though at Croker. Anelka charging at Kilbane or perhaps Henry racing at McShane is a sobering thought. :(

Anyone know who the dread-locked black dude assisting with the draw was? I take it he's a footballer (or possibly former ?)

It was Everton's Steven Pienaar I think.

Because Portugal would probably mean Ronaldo is playing (When is he due back from injury?) And playing Russia would mean going to Moscow in Winter

So Portugal because of one player, and Russia because it might be cold??

    Gimme a break.

    Ronaldo<<<<<<<<<<<Henry, Anelka, Benzema, Ribery etc
    Cold<<<<<<<<<<<<<Henry, Anelka, Benzema, Ribery etc

Russia aren't that great a side, and neither are Portugal.

France, have by far the greatest attacking threat of the 3, and against our very mediocre defence...

For a bloke who calls himself IRISHSPORTSGUY you should have known that it was Steven Peinaar from everton

I'm thinking it was Steven Pienaar. I think he plays for Everton.

Even if there was only 5 seconds of normal time left we would probably give them a chance to score before the final whistle was blown.

Imagine scoring an early goal in Croker. We'd have to hang on for 170 minutes, 90 of which would be in Paris. That ad about being behind the couch may not be far from the truth.

I think playing the second leg away might be a good thing cos i can see it being 0-0 at home and hopefully we might nick an score draw away cos were probably not going to beat them

Henry is not the player he was when they beat us in 05.

Anelka is an average player without Drogba beside him.

Benzema has had a poor start to the season, and has been outshone by Raul and Higuain.

I don't watch the German league so I can't honestly comment on Ribery, though the few times I did see him, he didn't live up to the hype I've heard about him.

We're well capable of nicking this.

true, but their defence doesnt seem to be much more impressive....

I just voted for France. Is it too late? I'm so annoyed because out of the last four playoffs, three of them have ended in a sad night away from home: The Netherlands in 1995, Belgium in 1997 and Turkey in 1999. Finally we got lucky in 2001 against Iran but they were opposition we always should have beat anyway. It seems like we always get shafted with the away leg second so our OPPOSITION knows what they have to do with support behind them.

I'd agree Russia would've been the worst. I think a lot of our success depends on Trappatoni's ability outsmart the opposition manager, and I wouldn't have much hope against Hiddink. France are still a very difficult draw. My worry is that they'll just run through our midfield. I think we were fortunate having Italy in our group is that they're a more defensive side, which suited us. I think we can draw with them, a victory would take something special though. We have done special before though.

Yeah, he's only half world class now.
Anelka is an average player without Drogba beside him.
Yeah.....YEAH! He ain't no Kevin Doyle.
We're well capable of nicking this.
Ah, blind faith, only in Ireland!

If anything it will be Kerr lending Domenech a hand, the way he was shafted by JD&Co

it was inevitable that we would get the toughest team with a home game first.

    Fix ?

    err

    Yes

5-0 only against the Faroes wasnt it. I think Gallas got on the scoresheet as well. Presume Nasri would have been a CM if fit.

    Austria-France 3-1
    France-Serbia 2-1
    Romania-France 2-2
    Lithuania-France 0-1
    France-Lithuania 1-0
    Faroe Islands-France 0-1
    France-Romania 1-1
    Serbia-France 1-1
    France-Faroe Islands 5-0
    France-Austria 3-1

great attacking potential...maybe,but theres a difference between potential and famous names and performance on the pitch

Think Gourcuff is out of favour there now, it will probably be a front 4 of Ribery, Gignac/Benzema, Anelka and Henry

F*** me, talk about having the green-tinted goggles on!

Anelka even without Drogba, is a very much above average player. Benzema hasn't been that great but I'd still take him over Keane & Doyle.............and Ribery is one of the best players in the world ffs.

Lest us not forget Henry, Evra, Clichy, Diarra, Govou, Gignac etc. :)

Its time for management to start the homework. Get DVD's of every game in the France campaign, 3 weeks of domestic games to be visited, champions league games to be watched. Penalties and set pieces practised again and again at the next Irish training camp. Lets give this the best possible shot! We do the homework right, I believe we can beat them.

If the French FA had any balls they'd sack Raymondo today and install Laurent Blanc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,148 ✭✭✭✭Raskolnikov

Arguing whether you wanted to play France or Portugal is a bit like deciding whether you'd rather be eaten or burned alive.

Having said that, I would probably have favoured us getting France for the simple reason that Domenech will fear us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,951 ✭✭✭✭Villain

Anyone got any ideas on getting there cheaply?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

RE gettings tickets for the Paris leg, is it just an email request sent to the FAI address? Or something else?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,909 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Look at the results in the group http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/europe/teams/team=43946/fixturesresults.html.

How can people say they will hammer us? They came 2nd in there group and played badly. We are well able to win this over two legs.

Staying out of this thread now. The '' ah well we are done now '' type posts are idiotic.
