Okay guys I really need some input here, I think my little budgie is sick. He's slept nearly all day today and his eyes are all shrunken and his feathers ruffled. He normally chats and talk a lot but hasn't said a word today. I've bathed him, hand fed him seeds and even put on his favourite music and it only made a small difference. I've covered his cage up to let him rest and he funnily enough seems to be stirring around a bit more now but if there's no improvement in the morning I want to get him to a vet. I know not all vet's see to birds but do you think if I call my local vets tomorrow and ask would they be able to tell me where to find an avian vet (in case they don't treat birds)? Or will I be wasting my time calling into them?

If so, does anyone know anywhere in town where I could have him seen quickly?

    Thank you.

Why don't you just open the Golden Pages and ring vets in your area?
It never fails to amaze me how many urgently sick animals are left waiting because their owners post on Boards ( and wait hours/days for a reply) rather than pick up the phone.

One year old. He's playing with his toys again now but I'd rather have him checked just to be safe.

er.. it's 22.02.. who exactly would answer the phone right now? If you read my post again you'll see that I've enquired about taking him there tomorrow.

It is a Sunday evening at 10pm, most vets aren't going to answer and not all will give details of an emergency vets.

    MizzLolly-
1890 564 036 is the emergency number given by my local vets, I'm nearly certain it's for the UCD emergency vet. They may even know somewhere closer to you

The vast majority of vets have a voicemail with information about on-call vets, for emergencies/urgent cases. I know from calling around vets when my own animals are unwell ;)

Not sure why you bathed him thats a bad idea with a sick bird, sick budgies need to be kept warm and any illness like this needs to be treated as an emergency. There are 24 hour vets although some may be of no use as they dont know enough about birds, fingers crossed you got through to one and the bird has been treated.

It could be anything perhaps an infections or respiratory issue or tumour etc.

Have you been cooking with non stick cookware or using household sprays etc. Non stick is toxic or could he of eaten something he shouldnt of.

So many things could be wrong if the bird gets treated with an antibiotic (usualy baytril or the like) ensure he gets avi pro pro biotic as well.

Keep him in a warm room in the mean time.

Are we to assume that this 'town' you speak of is Dublin. Because the last time I checked there were many towns in Ireland. Now, I could give you the number of a really good small animals surgery in my local town. But who's to know if it's anywhere near where you are!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,770 ✭✭✭Jen Pigs Fly

There should be some 24 hour on call vets around if you really are concerned.

Although ... most of the vets I generally call after working hours is for livestock ... It's worth a shot though, if I can get a vet out to a horse at 4 in the morning, you can find a vet that is open for emergencies.

No need for sarcasm If *you* had read the thread, you'd see I gave her a number for UCD and she said thanks (I happen to know her and know she lives in Dublin) but considering she thanked me for the UCD number she'd hardly in Galway now is she?

Just so you know Magenta, I suggested she check here for a vet who looks after birds as I suspected that not all might. I thought she might get a helpful answer. So why don't you just have a go at me instead of an obviously worried poster looking for help. ;)

    Mizzlolly, hope he's ok.

Just so you know, when I say bathed, I mean I cleaned him down with a moist piece of cotton wool. He was filthy yesterday, which isn't like him at all. I find myself cleaning up his messes a lot since lastnight. I'm thinking that it may be a tummy upset of some sort because usually there's no problem like this with him. He likes to snuggle into my sleeve y'see, maybe it's because I'm very warm to him, I dunno but when he was snuggled up I just removed the dirt off of him with a damp piece of cotton and then hand fed him some seeds and let him sleep under my sleeve. So I have been very careful to look after him and to keep him warm. It was after this when he began to perk up a bit so I guessed he was a bit miserable feeling all dirty and didn't have the energy lastnight to keep himself clean.

I don't know if I was wrong or not, I just thought it was best to keep him comfortable and he loves attention so I wanted to give him loads of it.

You'll be happy to know though that this morning he's much brighter. He's been grooming himself for about fifteen mins now and he's looking all shiny and cute like he normally does. He's also acting cheeky again and putting his head inside the bell and chirping. So thank God he seems to have picked up a bit. But I do still really need to get him to a vet, just to be safe.

Thanks, Star-pants. A few of the comments here have made me very reluctant to post any updates on his progress. Somehow it seems that the finger is pointed at me but I've been doing my best with him. It's good to see how much you're monitoring the replies. Thank you.

Just so you know, I've rang three vets since I last posted and none of them could help me. They were all very nice, wished me luck etc but did not treat birds. I also spoke to the guys in UCD but they also said that they don't treat birds. I've rang an emergency line and I am waiting for a call back now about an avian vet. One woman said she thought she heard there was one in Bray so I'm waiting for them to get back to me. So fingers crossed. Thank God he's in better form this morning though, or I don't know what I'd do. I feel kind of useless just waiting now but I honestly don't know what else to do so I don't get Magenta's attitude. I've rang, I've enquired, I'm still waiting. So here's hoping. :)

Glad to hear you've gotten hold of someone Mizzlolly - hope all will be ok :)

p.s. Stevoman - report a post if you've an issue please

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,132 ✭✭✭Sigma Force

Ah I see, you never said in the origional post that he was dirtying himself, its obviously so some sort of tummmy upset or infection or he ate something he shouldnt of or perhaps fruit that was over ripe.

Either way if the little fella becomes ill again treat it as an emergency every time. Birds can go downhill very quickly.

Wiping the poop off him and keeping him extra warm is fine, keeping his vent clean would be important.

Hope he feels back to his normal self soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭Whispered

Mizzlolly is on her way to the vet now. From what I could make out, he got very lethargic pretty quickly this morning and she's worried that his eyes look very sunken. Hopefully he'll be ok.

He's such a character, one of the funniest little animals I've met.

    Well hello Hero!

The fact of the matter is:

    1. Birds, by nature, will do their best to conceal any illness until it is no longer possible for them to hide it. This is a protective mechanism. Therefore, if they are unwell it needs to be treated as an emergency.

    2. Posting on Boards is not the most productive way to look for a vet. The Golden pages is. At the very least, if you insist on posting on Boards to look for a vet in your area, then at least say which area it is.

Magenta - you know sometimes boards IS actually quicker or she could have posted here and was looking through the pages too. If you don't like it - then don't post, don't give out to people looking for help.

Anyway -end of that side of this topic.

That's awful helena - I hope he gets seen to quickly!

Oscar has been seen to, thankfully it looks like he's going to be ok. I'm sure mizzlolly will update you when she gets back.

Well, I'm back from the vets now! My poor lil man has gastroenteritis believe it or not! The vet said he's in great shape, very healthy apart from his tummy bug and that he can tell he's spoiled rotten :o

He's on a course of light antibiotics now and he said he should be feeling better in no time.

I actually did act as fast as I could. It took more than five different vets before one could take him in the end, that's where the delay was. I don't quite understand why the finger is being pointed at me, I've been worried sick about him and did everything I could. I was feeling bloody terrible, wondering if he'd be ok and I can't say some of the comments here helped me in anyway whatsoever. The hostility here is absolutely uncalled for. Anyway, that's irrelevant now, the vet is happy with him, I'm happy with him and most importantly, my budgie is happy. So a big thanks to everyone who posted here to actually offer some help. I'm so glad he's okay! :D

MizzLolly you did your best and you've gotten him seen to - and he'll be on the mend. I'm glad to hear it :)

MizLolly... glad to hear the budgie is on the mend and fair play to you for updating given the negative and sarcastic comments which some have posted.

You did the right thing by asking here.... I only know of one avian vet in the Leinster area and surprise surprise she doesnt open at 10pm on a Sunday night

Funnyily enough Magenta.... I cant find the avian vet section in the golden pages.... musnt be in my book!!

It might be under "Veterinary surgeons" ;)

To be fair its very difficult to get an avian vet, there are only a handful that specialise in birds but a good general small animal vet should be able to do the basics.

Great hes been treated would highly recommend, if not already, that hes put on an pro biotic as well. Antibiotics are harsh on budgies, can effect their breathing so it helps. Avi pro is great for budgies recovering as it gives them an extra boost. The vet might stock it or try brendaspets.ie
