Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I had the pleasure of interviewing George a few years ago and he's an absolute legend. A hive of sporting information and a gentleman.

He has been the voice of Irish soccer since I was a kid and he's still going strong at the top. I'd rather RTE spent a lump sum on him than two or three wasters.

It'll be a sad day when he hangs up his mic.

so he flys out the day of a game turns up at the stadium and instantly knows the CSKA Moscow back 4? if you read my full post you will see i mentioned he wouldnt be at home as the amount of research for these games must be huge.

Even if he was only away the amount you mentioned do you not think he should be well paid for the inconvienence?

    Two points:

CSKA Moscow with their difficult to pronounce names and geographical distance from Ireland is the most extreme example you could possibly have come up with and is in no way representative of his job on a day-to-day basis. I also doubt in the extreme the suggestion that he doesn't have research assistence.

Secondly: Define well-paid? Many people working 8-6 5 days a week consider 30,000e a year to be pretty damn well-paid.
Are you trying to suggest that, if he were on any figure less than 216K a year, that he would not be well-paid?

The problems with RTE aren't one bloke on 200k a year.

Ah yeah, I know that of course, but it is a symptom of the problems in RTE - too many people are earning massive wages.

I hate to labour this point but RTE/Ireland cannot afford to be paying people over 200k per year.

    Exactly.

By the way you expect defense of Hamo here, just as you would expect defense of Hook in the Rugby forum, or Tubs in the Entertainment forum etc etc etc.

my point is that if i was the top guy in my field in the country then i would expect to be the top paid guy in my field. not saying that has to be 216k but i am saying 216k isnt a hard amount to come up with.

are you seriously trying to compare someone on 30k to this? seriously?
someone on 30k with 20 years experience in their profession either isnt working hard enough or is not good enough or should think about another profession.

    Use 'I' will you. Jesus.

216K isn't a hard amount to come up with? What?

Okay, you won't go with the idea of someone with 20 years experience on 30K so lets choose 70K. Still pretty well-paid no? The point still remains - nice try.

    Nice try?

I will put this simply as this is my last reply and i dont think you will accept my point of view regardless of what i say.

George H is the top commentator in the country. Add to this his 20 years experience.
Commentating is a specialist career and not everyone can just become one.
The top man in ANY profession has to be paid very well for it, add the 20 years experience. Add to this the inconvienence of worldwide travel and I am saying you have to come to a figure of 150k +.

That is my point of view and if you dont agree fair enough, but no-one with his CV would do this for 70k.

The problem I have with it is RTE are totally financially ****ed, and the country is totally financially ****ed.

I like the guy, but his pay is excessive considering we cannot afford it. If you don't believe me, head on over to the "Irish Economy" forum to see how deluded we are/have been about how much money this country has.

The thing is RTE cant tell George your down to 150k because of the recession.
His fully deserved wages rose to this point at a time when money seemed to be growing on trees and so no1 really gave a fcuk.
I would have thought the top irish commentator over the past 2 decades would be on more.
Pat Kenny is on 5 times that, so really the issue here should be why Hamilton isnt on more as i can only assume Rte sport generates quite a lot of income in proportion the the Late Late show etc??

How much does Michael O' Mhuircheartaigh earn? If Hamilton's longevity, the fact that he is an iconic voice of his sport and his unparrallelled knowledge of facts and figures are being used as justification for his current earnings, then surely a national treasure like Michael, whos been commentating for over 60 years deserves the same if not more? (Bear in mind I think Hamilton definitely deserves his current earnings).

€219k is generous but probably not extortionate for what he does, IMO -

on the other hand payin a plank of wood a million despite the fact that h is almost universally hated by all IS outrageous ;)
