Have the product code but no disk

    and trying to install the works suite that originally came with my recently resurected laptop

    can the installation be downloaded as long as you have the product code or do have to serch some more for the disk

    Bah, works is useless really.
    Better off going with Openoffice. A full office suite for free..

    Ive never actually installed Works (Id usually be uninstalling it) so no idea if the cd even asks for a product key..

    wont be me using it, how good is open office for a novice, only really need it for microsoft word

    It should be grand. Layout is similar to Microsoft Office 2003. Standard toolbars etc..

    If the user will be sharing documents with other people it might be a good idea to set the default file formats to Microsofts ones, or else they could email a document and the other person couldn't open it. Instructions here.

    This is much better than Works and can open and edit all the Microsoft Formats including .doc,xls etc. Works can't open the Microsoft Office formats so it's a pain if you get sent a document from someone else.

    It comes with a watered down version of Word. Go with OpenOffice. It's far superior to Works, but as someone already said, make sure you change the default document save to .doc instead of .odf.
