I am looking for poles for a building project. Have contacted Coilte and they just said to turn up where they're harvesting and they'll dump some by the road - pickup and transport my problem. Tried for old eircom poles but they seem to be sticky about selliing them due to 'environmental hazard' (creosote). So have been wondering about buying a crop off someone's forestry - say an acre - and harvesting it myself. I'm in Meath (Nr Ballivor), where should I look for people advertising this kind of thing?

Might also be worth contacting private forest management companies. See http://www.itga.ie/index.asp

If pick-up and transport is your problem with the Coillte site, how do you plan to pick-up and transport the one acre you intend harvesting yourself? You could ask a haulier on the Coillte the job to deliver the poles for you. It would be a lot easier than harvesting an acre of forest yourself, plus you don't have to worry about felling licences, insurance, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions. The reason that Coilte didn't seem such a good option was also that they seemed quite expensive. I think the quote was about €25-30 per cubic metre. I guess if I could get a driver to deliver for me that would make things easier alright. I thought though if I could get hold of a local plot I could tip away at it myself and draw with a trailer. Didn't consider insurance, licence etc though...
Will look into your link, thanks
