Why do people hate Phil Taylor

    Hello folks,

I watch the odd bit of darts on telly now and then and find it quite enjoyable, but I wouldn't know the ins and outs of everything that goes on. I know Phil Taylor is probably the best in the world, but whenever I do watch him he seems to get booed a good bit by certain sections of the crowd no matter where it is/what tournament he's in. Also, I've read a few posts and the like and always seem to come across people with a dislike for him.

What's the story there? Did he do something/make some controversial statement at some stage that people won't forgive? He just seems fairly gracious when he wins, always thanks the crowd and his opponent etc.

It's not that he's hated, it's that darts fans are just desperate to see someone else win a trophy, for their sport to be competitive,

Everyone respects Taylor the darts thrower, they're just sick of watching him hammer all their other favourites

Ah, otherwise known as Schumacher Syndrome.

or the Davis syndrome, or Hendry syndrome or Bristow sydrome. When Ali was at his peak I bet the for most people the most enjoyable part of watching him was when Cooper put him down.

Its not so much everyone hates the champ as everyone wants to see the underdog succeed, the same supporters who booed Barney against Barry, cheered him on against Taylor.

I think its more because he is so patronising in his interviews he does.

Every player he has played against is in taylor words a lovely bloke ,a great player,a future world champion even after hes just hameered some poor sod 6 sets 0..
Every time hes on tv he predicts a 9 dart finish and sometimes predicts there will be 2 in the 1 match .

A couple of years ago the crowd taught taylor was a legend yet he was still winning everything back then.

I think you can sum taylor up in his acceptance speech than he dedicated the win to stephen gatley and his family.he said that they were a lovely family.
now lm sure they are but l wonder if taylor has ever even met them.

Basisaly what lm trying to say is people are just getting sick of patronising other players and his nicey nicey attitude all the time while getting interviewed.

The other players dont like him and have'nt realy for as long as l can remember.

I met him when he was playing county darts for Staffordshire and didn't really take to him then. Not the nicest bloke I've ever met, there are a lot of nicer fellas on both cricuits, Jamie Caven, Colin Osbourne, Denis Ovens, Mark Walsh, Darryl Fitton, Tony O'Shea to name a few. They will sit and talk to you, have a pint and give you advice.

I don't hate him, I respect the fact that he is the greatest player ever to play the sport, but it's becoming incredibly boring to watch him hammer everyone he plays against. People just want to see someone else winning. It would be great if a number of players had what it takes to beat Taylor and win a tournament but at the moment there is no one really, even Barney and Wade are nowhere near him.

I also agre with robbie, he can be very patronising to other players and to be honest he doesn't come across as a very likeable man.

    Best player ever though!

Have to agree with Robbie on his comments about Taylor. When doing after match interviews the man is so false it isn't even funny! I don't hate the man,the only problem with him is that he's winning too much! Did meet the man 1 time at an exhibition and he was ok but not very chatty.

Not to mention, 'this ones for my mate Robbie Williams - Robbie Savage - David Beckham - Ricky Hatton'.. Worst name dropper ever. Really pathetic for a man of his age. You can't help but admire his dedication though. He's light years ahead of the rest.

Any of the players I met briefly were sound. Terry Jenkins was a really nice bloke. Still my favourite player.

Agree with the patronising and namedropping which has already been mentioned, I too dislike this about taylor. I really hate when he gets booed though, its not on. There are far worse things you can do on stage than dedicating your win to some celebrity who you want to become friends with.
(the obligatory) He is undoubtedly the greatest darter ever to "grace" the oche though!

Seen it all today, he has someone carry his darts to board for him and then open case so Phil can take them out, Phil then hands them back to his man servant who puts them away for him :rolleyes:

The man might be 14 times World champion but that's ridiculous carry on!

He also did not mark games like every other winner had to in the rounds up to board final and was also escorted to and from his private practice room somewhere in the Gleneagle complex. I know every player can get someone to mark there game for them but if Manley, Walsh, Jenkins etc etc can do it why can't Taylor?

  • Registered Users Posts: 31 fryer99

Agree that he's pure condescending. Its all 'they' and 'them'. There's such a thing as a gracious winner, he's just patronising.

His squrrill grin annoys me too

Maybe Bobby George is right about his abbreviation of the PDC "Phil's Darts Club"!:p

Phil Taylor is not only the best darts player ever, he is also one of the greatest sportsmen ever.

Ease off on the booing then.

Yes C.B dead right. But his whole attitude in Killarney today was obnoxious.
On board 1 for quick escape each time. Had PDC officials do his marking for him. Escorted by 2 security men and his ''minder'' to and from board. Worse though was his attitude to the crowd, his disrespect for hosts..the Glen, the sponsors and last but not least Michael O'Sullivan when he went up to take photos and everybody else that has put this tournament together by totally ignoring the crowd, spoke only to the PDC officials and a little to opponents. Walked off stage after both his semi and final victories without a glance at the audience and ignored kids waiting all day for an autograph. He hasn't been here before and only came after being promised a series of exhibitions along with the prize money more or less guaranteed for winning both events. I know him for 16 years but the Phil Taylor seen nowadays has the head seriously swelled and is not wanted or needed back here again. If I was the bewildered sponsor of todays event I'd have kicked him off the stage there and then !
It will be interesting to see how he acts tomorrow, probably more of the same or worse.
Incidentally C.B well done last night on qualifying and good luck tomorrow

I met him yesterday and thought he was a sound fella!! He was on a tight schedule and he agreed to meet the last 20 or so people waiting to get his autograph when he could have just got up and left because the staff at mahers closed the doors!! Everyone I spoke to that met him agreed that he is a lovely person!

I'm sure he was'nt there to pass away the time and was being very well paid to smile and sign autographs for you.
Much different story at the Glen !

Did you see him at the Gleneagle today, there was a very quiet, respectful crowd there but at one point he even gave them the finger during his game !

No wasnt in the Gleneagle.. Was he serious?? He is just gonna loose a massive fan base with carry on like that when I suspect a good crowd went down just to see him..

The crowd were sound, not a ''Boo'' to be heard. Too many people put too much effort into getting this together for one man to spoil it now and I hope it continues for a long time to come. Nobody is bigger than the game and the time will come when hardly anybody will want an autograph, ask Eric Bristow !

Not a huge fan of Taylor a lot of the time, but I think he was in the right here. Mason seems a right pillock and was way out of order that morning in the papers and on stage.

    *****
As for his patronising players he's defeated - I'm genuinely not sure exactly how you are supposed to behave in interviews when you go through entire competions beating everyone 5-0 and 6-1. Theres probably no other sport where someone consistently wins by such margins. Ronnie would win snooker matches 10-6 and even a dominant Federer would usually be taken to a tie break in one set, so they could at least talk about turning points etc.
Whereas Taylor often dominates from start to finish.

Why did he give the finger? Was there noise when he was throwing or something? I always thought Taylor was bad but I never thought he would stoop this low!

Hard to see why King ? but again tonight after keeping Nicholson waiting for 15mins he walked off without acknowledging the crowd and of course no attempt made at any speech or such like by him. Many would have paid E15 per head to see him in an exhibition there Friday and E10 each time for both yesterday and today. That along along with the price of a dry sandwich being E4.20 made it very costly for any Mammy and Daddy to bring the kids to so a quick wave and a kind word would have gone a long ways and would not have been too much to ask for.

Its all well and good taylor picking up these cheque's almost uncontested but he cuts through the majority of players and the few players who can really give him a game

    Barney
    Mervyn King
    James Wade

didnt travel to killarney, for as long as the #2-6 make smaller tournaments optional to themselves taylor will clean up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,882 ✭✭✭sc86

jasus i knew taylor was a bit cocky but i didnt know he had gone this bad, im a big fan of his but reading stuff like this dissapoints me, the reason the game is gettin such crowds and tv coverage is basically down to his unbelivable talent, if he did stop playin it would be a big blow for darts, but its taylor bigger than the pdc?? are they afraid to say anything to him??
if hes being a cock like this to people then i can see why some players hate him, i always thought it was jelousy but i now see theres alot more to it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,022 ✭✭✭jamesbere

i respect taylor alot and i think he has brought the sport to a new level which is great and i agree with one thing he said and why should he stop there is no one putting it up to him so i think he should keep goin.

but on the other hand i think he is a bit of an ass and has this attitude that he can walk on water which is wrong cos alot of young people look up to him and he looks down on alot of players, they work just as hard as him but at least they can find time to mix with other players and have photos with fans as in killarney this weekend.

so i move for this thread to be stopped cos it could go on forever and lets get back to talking about darts not phil taylor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,282 ✭✭✭Carrickman

Before you lock this I too was also shocked by the whole Taylor circus over the weekend he has really gone down in my estimations as I was one of those who would stand up for him but not anymore.
