Yeah i seen a thread on it before, there is illegal streams quoted on boards since obviously the mods cant catch them all but from what i read they cant be held responsible, just if you read (d) its easy to interpret it as "If someone posts a link to a stream" then theyre publishing information that assists in intercepting the service. But anyway thats slightly de-railing the thread.

To at least give something back to the thread after the derail i got Winimax in a couple of months ago because there was no dsl available at the time and after a shaky 1st month its pretty damn good. Ive used mobile broadband and ive used UPC and although its not as good as UPC i need internet for work, i have regular skype meetings, constantly download files etc and ive no problem downloading (legal) torrents or anything like that although i dont do it that often so maybe its something they penalise if youve been doing an excessive amount.

So its pretty damn solid considering its not dsl, i would still choose UPC i had the choice of both (i believe UPC may be availalble here soon) but its definetely very solid with very little downtime, doesn't slow down at different times of the day or anything like that.

My Ping is pretty crap and my upload speed is slow but from what i read the ping would affect skype, i often use it continually for 1-2 hours without losing connection and having perfect sound which is surprising because my speedtest results are

    7.14 up
    0.24 down
    87ms ping

And thats pretty much standard throughout the day although its not always the full 7mb up, im on the 7mb connection btw.

I'm completely confused by this whole product. The parents have switched their home package to this and I'm trying to find out about it.

It's not unlimited, its got a 30G limit per month. This is hidden in their FUP.

I've read the AUP and don't see any mention of 30gb. Is there another policy I need to read, if so do you have a link?

    Fixed Wimax is good.

ANY Mobile/Nomadic product with indoor aerials on 3.5GHz will be poor

I guess I'm confused by the terms fixed and mobile. What is fixed Wimax? Is the 7mb package on this page fixed?

If it is fixed, is it any good a service in your opinion and especially for a heavy downloaded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,953 ✭✭✭dvdfan

Im quite impressed with it, im a bit outside town so they put up an antenna on the building, its only a small one, some of friends in town just have that modem you linked to on their webpage presumable because their closer to the tower.

The 1st month was a bit choppy but that was to be expected as they just launched it, last 3-4 months its being extremely solid, consistently getting 5+mb, very rare downtime or slowing down at peak times.

I also use skype daily and its perfect for that, good download speeds, they dont block torrents, its far superior to any mobile type internet Ive used but its not as good as UPC which i found superb.

Imagine don't do fixed wimax at all, they only do mobile. They do a fixed install for people with weaker signals but with other users being mobile it all becomes mobile. Having other customers with weaker signals lags eveyone on the network.
Many other providers do fixed install only, this guarantees everyone on the network has the best possible signal meaning the network copes better and is controllable, it means a home visit and a receiver fitted to the external of Your house and cabled in
Imagine took the cheap customer self install and mobile dongle route meaning they can never control the lag on their network. The signal with a dongle inside Your house is many times worse than a fixed receiver fitted to Your roof/wall

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Breeze may be a kind of Fixed WiMax, certainly BreezeMax gear is. But Imagine don't seem to want to sell it now and even seem to be replacing it with their Mobile/Nomadic gear.

The Fixed kind of network costs about €250 more per customer install, but is an EIGHT times better network for same capacity.

Is Imagine in breach of licence for using FWALA (Fixed Wireless Access) licences for spectrum / capacity wasting Mobile/Nomadic gear just for a short term once off network investment that permenently leaves an inferior network in place?

This is what i have, its a fixed antenna on the external wall and its cabled into my house. This might explain why mine is much better, i know a couple of mates that just have the modem and must ask them next time i see them how its going for them

Strange one that some one here maybe able to explain,

I have Breeze Max , any way they were changing the frequency's and knocked every one off in the Area.

So an engineer is out with me now and he tells me that both Breeze Max and WiMax are to run on the same frequency, they have just put the WiMax station on Top of the Whitewater shopping station.

Will having both the Breeze max and Wimax on the same frequency effect how good Breeze max was before

look Irish broadband was a complete con these are the same people who are behind wimax and I'm not gonna fall for it, I ordered 7 meg I'm being billed for 7 meg and if they cant do better than the.7 i'm getting at the moment they can have their poxy box back and I wont charge them for wasting the last 3 months of my life I signed up in May but received the pathetic service about a month ago. if I hit the airwaves about this like the joe duffy show I'd appreciate some support, every time I hear that add I feel like smashing the telly

I think you have to have the fixed antenna to have any hope of decent service.

Have the fixed one and it is good although I still get the occasional ping spikes, downloads speeds are good, upload is a joke as is usual for Irish ISP's.

I usually get at least the 7Mbps, sometimes higher still. It does drop below it occasionally.

    what a f****n joke,

i ordered wimax after getting fed up of perlico disconnection every 20-30mins on xbox live. I live roughly 1 mile as the crow flies from a mast, on a hill and was assured that i would get a great signal.

Got the wimax hub, best i can do is 1 green light of 4, cant activate it, imagine tell me "if i cant get a signal i cant get a signal" and tell me ill need to get an outside mast installed and is this ok, they dont inform me that it costs €100 until i enquire at which point i loose the head and tell them that their heap of ****e box will be here to collect whenever they want it. They then said they'll call me before the end of the day, 8pm. Anyone else have equally ****ty experiences of them.
If they do the mast for free i might give them a go, otherwise i'll have to persevere with perlico a bit longer.

good luck to em with that, they did mention a 7 day grace period although something about paying for expences, postage i presume, they'll get fuch all from me, i've cancelled the direct debit

i have cancelled the direct debit too and I'm charged £12.70 for everytime its rejected, all I get is automated reply's to emails and promises of call backs that never come , and I want is for them to take their poxy box back and get out of my life . I forgot the golden rule, if its Irish its gonna be corrupt , incompetent or both . never again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 452 ✭✭Murtinho

i was in touch with them now and they're cancelling the order, no charge, the hub wil be collected in 10-12 days.

I might still decide to go for the outdoor arial, have to see what other options are out there, had me heart set on wimax for the past yr, have to go grovelling to Perlico now:eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

    Why perlico?
    Lots of other DSL resellers.

If you can get 1Mbps or better no point messing with Mobile/3G unless you are needing Mobility, Alternately Mobile or Imagine Wimax unless cancelling phone line and broke.

Why not go straight to Eircom, they have NGB in Wexford now and are sure to give you a good deal to get you back from Perlico.Check what speed your line can handle.Certain parts of Wexford town have great speeds with Imagine Wimax ask around down there,it seems that Imagine got their act together down there after a poor start and have transmitters in Bishopswater area of the town now.

The Imagine WiMax is inherently poor. It's only going to be fine on masts with few customers.

As I said, ask around,if the op's neighbours have good things to report give it a try but I'd reckon Eircom would be the safest option. On the topic of Imagine Wimax,I've spoken to a lot of people that have Imagine Wimax in Wexford and strangely it works fine for them and I was one of it's biggest critics but have been surprised.

Ive just had it installed. Up until now all i could get was dodgy on and off 3 G cover as I live in the centre of the middle of nowhere. After moving a few thing around in relation to receiver / Mac/etc etc its really good. However my middle of nowhere location is actually benefit as i live in the shadow of the mountain that the mast is located on. That said i have neighbours either side of me who cant get it!!!!

Hey I cancelled my WiMax the other day after only four weeks and went back to Eircom. I'm going to use Magnet for my BB. Check them out on these boards I haven't seen a single bad comment and they have a dedicated rep on these boards Rory who can't do enough to help people.

is wimax really bad? thinking bout getting it as its 25euro cheaper a month than eircom

    talkin wrote: »

In a nutshell yes! The reason they're so much cheaper than Eircom is by no means out of the goodness of their hearts it's because their product doesn't use a phoneline thus no line rental fee which is not coincidentally 25euro.

Yes I hear you say 'cheaper is still cheaper' then let's look at the service. (Just as a nod to the moderators this is simply my experience I'm not claiming this is common Imagine WiMax service).

My biggest beef is the fluctuating speeds. In 4 weeks on the '7' Mb package I've experienced top speeds twice. I run a speed test a number of times a day and I often get anywhere between 0.98 and 2.65 no more. The fluctuation makes it impossible for online gaming.

Another problem is the setup. I have two sky box's and two phones in the home. The WiMax hub has only two phone ports and doesn't accomodate multiroom connections since it sits in one spot.

I hear a rumour that they expect to have another two arials installed in Ennis by December but the way they're signing up customers I wouldn't bet the technology will ever keep up with the usage. There again the way people are returning to Eircom it might.

The choice is yours but if you decide to give them a try it'll take a months charge and a hundred beer vouchers to get rid of them if it doesn't work out. The good thing is Eircom won't charge to reactivate your line as they will consider you a 'winback'.

    I'm such a retard.

Guy just came to my door from Imagine WiMax. nice guy, told me about the 7MB download plus no usage restriction.

Anyway I signed up as it's about the same price as my current provider.
Gave the dude my bank details and all.

Glad I found this thread, this WiMAX looks complete bollox.

Thank heavens I have 7 days to cancel the thing. Which I am about to do. Feel bad about wasting the guy's time though.

You're by no means a retard. The guy who called to my door could bring peace to the Middle East. Now me on the other hand I'm thick as pigs*** since I decided to check Boards.ie after my cooling off period so now I get a nice €100 cancellation charge. BTW I'm pretty sure the legal cooling off period is ten days whatever WiMax say.

Hey I got Wimax in the Clondalkin Area last Sunday, Cancelling it today. When I rang inquiring about the package the guy on the phone said that I would be close to the park west mast so I could expect a good speed from a 7 Meg package. When I got it all i could sign up for was the 3 meg which is berly giving me 1 meg speeds at home!! Thank god for the cooling off period bye bye wimax and judging by the reviews on boards hello upc!

  • Site Banned Posts: 5,676 ✭✭✭jayteecork

emailed my cancellation notice AND went out and posted a letter as well.

    Just to make sure.

Can't believe I was duped into it. I guess getting a 7MB line and unlimited downloads for €35 a month sounded too good to be true.
There had to a catch. And the catch is WiMax is complete toilet bowl.

****e guys, this is making me worry. I ordered a few weeks ago but haven't got it installed yet. I was on to them today and they said it would probably be another month before i get installed because they haven't put a mast up in my area yet. This is despite telling me that it was available in my area when i signed up.

So basically seeing as i haven't got connected yet, no equipment installed obviously. Cooling off period is well expired though. Will i incur this E100.

You shouldn't since your not receiving a service.

Under Irish consumer legislation goods provided must be fit for purpose. In my own opinion in this case the goods are your equipment and contract and the purpose is receiving BB.

Again if it were me, I'd have them for false advertising since they sold you a product under the pretense it was available when it wasn't.

And thirdly how can they charge you for cancelling a product that doesn't exist?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 50 ✭✭alanfa

I received this poxy service in august it was as slow as analogue after a couple of weeks I attempted to cancel it, their policy was if they ignored me I'd go away its October now , its still not cancelled , they're still trying to extort money from me , they want a connection fee of £50 a disconnection fee of £100 and 2 months rental of £84, no matter what I say to them they wont cancel, they just fob me off , I have absolutely no intention of paying a penny , i'll probably end up in court , and frankly its starting to have an adverse affect on my health

Its just the thoughts that someone can run a phony advertising campaign, not deliver the service and still attempt to extort money from me , I 'm receipt of a carer's allowance and my fear is if I dont get to the bank every week before Wimax I'll have no money for the week. Ireland really has gone to the dogs rapidly

If that's what either your bank or Wimax told you then it's simply not true. It's your account your business if you want to close a DD you can. I reordered Eircom and cancelled my DD at the bank. The little trout sniffers can chase me if they want.
