How do you line up numbers on a word document, for example I am writing a contents page and I need all page numders to be directly under each other in a straight line?

This is pretty much how I do it, explained better than I can here -> http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html

    that will work.

but for an easier solution: don't use word for writing big documents or reports. maintaining the formatting is a nightmare. Instead use latex which makes formatting a document, and inserting table of contents, page numbers, figures, setting margins, etc. a whole lot easier than word.

anyway, I know that's little help to you now OP, but maybe in the future it might be worth looking at.
